Documented Triple Fuel Filtration w/Pics, BOM
I snapped pictures as I added the Severe Duty Filter Kit and an extra final filter to my 07 Ram and put it in a PDF file. Thought it might be worth posting as it might help someone looking for information on one way of doing it. The only kit is the Mopar SDFK which I modified, the rest are all components I picked up and fabricated the way I wanted it.

I have a 7 micron in the factory fuel canister and a Baldwin 2 micron fuel filter between that and the Cp3.
Similar to you, when I cut open the Baldwin after 20000km/12000miles it looked nearly perfect.
I think one could leave the last fuel filter in there for a long time based on size and the fact its getting filtered fuel.
