Fresh Fuel?

I wanted to ask you guys your opinion. I have a buddy that is an over the road driver and has had a Dodge Cummins before. He tells me I should only buy my fuel from a truck stop.

I had been buying my fuel at a small town Citco station. He tried to tell me that the fuel in the truck stop is fresher and I will get better mileage with fresh fuel.

According to his experence he said I should go from 17 to 20 or 21 MPG. I was buying the Citco fuel for $1.549 and getting 17MPG, costing about .09 per mile. I just filled up at the Pilot on the freeway at $1.699. If I get 21 MPG it will figure out to about .08 per mile.

I have only gone though a half tank so far but according to the overhead computer it says I'm getting about 2MPG better but I never trust the computer. I'll do an actual calculation at refill time.

He's the kicker...
The truck does seem to start better, smell better (BTW, I love that diesel smell) and I honestly believe the engine does not cackle as bad. It may be all in my head though.

Just wondered what you guys think or have prooven.

I always fuel my pick up were I fuel my big truck. At the high volume stations I deliver. I've never fueled at a low volume station, because I always fuel at card locks that are affiliated with my co. I get a employee discount. Don't really know that fresh fuel will net you any better mileage, but less risk of getting dirty or contaminated fuel. In 21 years of hauling fuel for the same co. I have never had to change my fuel filter on my big truck between service intervals.
