Going to start doing my own oil changes, what filter brands do you use?

How about your air and fuel filters?

I just read the oil thread, sounds like the Delvac was the winner.

Where do you go for the oil analysis? I was just learning of this the past couple of weeks. (I thought it was just a PSD thing)I heard the 6.7's are making oil? Do the 5.9's have the same issue? My dip stick doesn't show over full.

Last question, how long between oil changes, in months. My last change was last May 09 but I was only able to put 4k miles on it all non towing. Truck is mostly for pulling a 5th wheel which we didn't take out last year.

Do a little looking in th forums. Everyone of these topics have been talked about a few times in the last couple of days.

 

I change oil every 5000 miles. Delo 15/40.
BT 7349 Baldwin oil filter.
PF 7977 Baldwin Fuel filter.(stock filter)
BF 1212 Baldwin water seperater( added extra filter)
BF 7633 Baldwin 5um fuel filter.( added extra filter)
Mopar 53034249AA air filter.
Any good name brand oil. I guess different strokes. Rotella, Delvec, Delo, Valvoline, Castrol, Amsoil, and many others all good oils. Its a choice you have make.

The only time you are going to make oil is if you have a bad injector or injectors. I recommend you change your fuel filter at every oil change and the best one is the Baldwin PF 7977. There are many threads on this forum covering the subject of filtering fuel for these cr engines. Many have added the water sept and extra filtration to insure clean fuel. Dirty fuel is the injectors biggest enemy.

 

I get my filters from Genos. www.genosgarage.com . They have good prices, reasonable charge for shipping, no tax, unless you live in Georgia, and I don't have to get a mopar($$$$$$) from dealer or drive 40+ mi's to the cummins store. BTW, they sell the Fleetguard stuff which is what the cummins wants.

 

I would say call your local dealer first.

Mine in Boise (I think it's Larry Miller Sundance Dodge, I'd have to ask the wife) offers a 4 oil change deal for $160 using Valvoline Premium Blue. I get all my maintenance done like it needs to and I don't have the mess in my garage or the "disposal" issues with the used oil and filter.

 

I change my oil every 10K miles and get a used oil analysis every time. The folks at Blackstone keep saying that I could go longer but I like the 10K mark. If you don;t hit 10K or what ever you are comfortable with you can get away with changing it once a year. Of course, some of this depends on your driving conditions for example if you only drive around town and the oil never really heats up you will have a lot of moisture and contaminints in it vs. the truck that works hard and burns that all up. I would suggest at least doing one used oil analysis to get an idea of how your truck is doing.

Also like was already said I would suggest getting a secondary fuel filter or at least getting the best drop in that you can. Fuel filtration is vital on these trucks.

Don't forget to lube the driveline while your under there.

 

That is a SMOKIN good deal. Around here they want $90 for an oil change.

I buy my oil filters from Cummins. It's a drive, but I buy a case and then have them on hand. Problem is I have 75,000 miles on and have gone through 18 filters.... Why? My buddies know I have a case of filters and stop by to borrow them all the time!!

My 'local' Cummins shop does them, but I send mine to Blackstone. Maybe do a search on the net to see who does them. Lots of guys get them done on here so someone will point you in the right direction.

 

None that I'm aware of. I use Oil Anaylzers. They will do TBN for about the same as others charge for analysis with no TBN

 

Oil Analyzers for oil test, for oil filters Donaldson EFL 7349 or Fleetguard Stratapore LF 16035. Fuel filters Baldwin PF7977 or Fleetguard Stratapore FS19856. For Dino Oil, Delo, Mobil Delvac, Valvoline Blue, for Synthetic oil Amsoil, Royal Purple and Redline.

 

Whats the TBN check for?

Also anyone looked into the Mobil TDT synthetic? It is not a semi synthetic like alot of the other "synthetics". I am doing a little reseach on it to see how it compairs to the Amsoil. It's a little cheaper and you don't have to pay for shipping it.

 

Total Base Number (TBN) measurements are frequently used to measure the useful remaining life of engine oil by determining the change in Base Number as an oil is utilized in the engine. Diesel engine oil must be blended with an adequate level of acid-neutralizing materials which act to buffer a substantial amount of acid buildup.

I beleive Mobil 1 TDT 15/40 is available at ChinaMart.

 

IMO, a good oil should have at least 11 TBN # starting out

 

At what level should it be changed? And whats a typical TBN to see on fresh oils these days?
