Exhaust Heat

My brother in-law and I were towing some lumber home for my
father in-law over the weekend..... His truck is a stock 2nd generation unit. Mine 3rd with mods listed in sig. Anyway I had my box turned off since we were pulling long mountain grades with a good load and I don't have a pyro. So my question is in stock form how hot can the Exhaust get. I geared down and mantained speed engine temp climped slightly to right of center on gauge but no problems at all for ME. My bro in-law however developed a leak in his muffler and with the heat burned a hole in his fuel tank.
Talk about ****** off!
I fanned him alittle cause he just got done ragging me on my Staight Pipe!
