Heat wrap on Manifold and Exhaust housing

Got around to wrapping the downpipe, The turbo exhaust housing, and the manifold flange in good name brand heat wrap.
Not the stuff that once it gets hot a few times it falls apart.

The compressor housing before would get so hot I couldn't even touch it and now with the exhaust housing wrapped i can put my hand right on it after a long hard run with the truck and it doesn't burn me where before it would have melted my skin right to it.

I was pretty surprised in the results from this as the cruise egt is down about 75-100 Degrees, i can run my turbo timer about 30 seconds less and the truck cools down really fast now when i let off the throttle after a good run.

Full throttle egts are down a lot also. Not sure on the exact number I just know it takes A LOT longer to get egts up high by about 5-8 second.

Definatly worth the 50 bucks and the hour and a half to wrap it. looks alot better than a rusty housing too.

Im kinda going the same route you took on wrapping ur turbo/ down pipe. Mines gonna be a bit more spendy tho. I have my down pipe ceramic coated since its about a inch away from the heater box. I wanted to coat the pipe so it doesnt rust out in the future. I'll prolly wrap the down pipe later this fall/ winter when I get the bugs worked outta my truck.

This next spring im gonna have the manifold and turbine housing coated. Might even try running a heat shield on the turbo to see if that helps much?

What type of wrap & how much did you use? Reason I ask is I have 50ft roll of 1 inch wide doing nothing, might try it out.

I broke down and ceramic coated all the hot stuff to keep the heat in the exhaust gases for better turbo performance (see fine print). I also painted the compressor housings and outlet plumbing satin black to shed heat there. Further, I insulated the pipe from the air filter to the turbo and the IC's outlet pipe going to the engine to help keep that CA cool.

Any cons to this?

Some people have reported negative results, such as it takes considerably longer to get EGT's down to shutdown temps. Or possible cracking of the stock manifold...

He posted up there that shutdown temps took a lot less time to come down.

I painted my exhaust manifold and housing with Some flat black VHT header paint that says it will hold up to 2000 degrees. I don't really know if it runs any cooler or not, but it definately looks better, and its holdin up great. I've heard those turbo blankets work pretty good and have thought about gettin one.

Do those turbo blankets help protect your hood if you blow a turbo?

As far as I know the summit ones will harden after awhile and be useless if you want to remove them. Mine are made by turbo performance products out of utah. They are made specifically for cummins manifold and the he351 turbo. They also make em for h1c/hx35 and anything custom you might need. They were cheaper than ceramic coating as well. Very happy with them, they are holding up nice.
