engine rattle

I read back through the archives on this but couldnt find an answer. Im not sure if it is just "diesel" noise or if I have a problem. Truck has 1300 miles on it and it developed a light rattling knock in the engine, I can turn the radio on lightly and not hear it if that helps It is very metallic and doesnt sound like the normal dieseling noise to me. Doesnt do it at idle mainly during power up,say 1500 to 1800RPMS and still does it sporadically when running down the road at a fairly consistent RPMs. Rode in a buddys truck with about 2000 more miles on it and his isnt doing it. Was told it might be the push rod. No smoke, no oil burning, and mileage is slowly improving. ANY IDEAS?

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but is the first diesel for you? Just curious. I know that every little sound my truck made in the first few thousand miles I wondered about - especially when there was a rash of bad injector problems being posted on this site...

My previous truck was a 97 Ford PSD - it was a great truck BTW - but it was so loud that I couldn't really hear anything but the normal diesel cackle. My CTD is so quiet compared to the old PSD that I seem to be able to hear everything... My truck does have a certain diesel 'cackle' I guess you could call it around 1600 to 1800 rpms. Like I said - I thought it might be an injector going, but I've got 20K miles on it now, and there's no change in the oil level, no fuel smell in the oil, it gets decent mileage, and no white smoke, except for a small puff on startup when it's cold out.

If you have a concern with an engine noise drop by a Cummins shop and let them listen to it. That will give you peace of mind and prevent you from getting an ulcer from worrying. If you read these boards you will always be waiting for something to break on your truck. It is a diesel. They are noisy. Just the nature of the beast. But I recommend to stop driving it if it throws a rod or melts a piston etc.

That rattle may be caused by a bad injector. i think you would be getting some white smoke too though...

If it sounds like a pinging/preignition sound the early/mid 80's cars made, then it is normal. Does it seem to just "turn on" at about the 1700rpm range?? Mine has done that since new. Third injection event maybe???
