So I guess we have decided that it is pre ignition. Pre ignition is bad for a engine and will cause problems like burned valves and burned pistons if it is not fixed. Not to mention it is bad for fuel economy. So what do you do to fix it? Do any of the programmers remove timing? Do any dealer updates remove timing? Do you set the valves looser?

It's not a damaging issue like it is on a gasser.

I have been seeing this with my truck for awhile now. I'm glad to hear it's something fairly common. One thing I've observed is that it's much more noticeable when the AC is on. Is that because of the load of the compressor, open vents allowing more engine sounds in? Or, am I just imagining things?

Gas engines are built from the same things a diesels, why would it burn a valve in a gas engine and not a diesel.

Because it's not really doing the same thing. It's not detonation in a diesel. Diesel is supposed to ignite as soon as it enters the cylinder, gas is not.

Timing rattle happens on most diesels, its just easier to hear on HPCR's because the pilot injection makes the main combustion quieter so you hear things besides the combustion.
