engine brake + auto trans??
engine brake + auto trans??
Hey all
New to Dodge, new to diesel (2003 2500 QC HO) and I was wondering...
Any point to an engine brake on an automatic transmission truck? Will be using the truck to pull 30' TT (if it ever gets shipped!) in the mountains and wonder if this is something I should look into?
There would be of course the ever present warranty issues.
Thanks for any and all replies!

Re:engine brake + auto trans??
I have found my exhaust brake to be the best accessory that I have put on my truck! I use it all the time, even when I'm not towing.
You will probably have to do some modifications to the trans, and of course, Dodge has not approved it for the 03's. :'(

Thanks for your reply BB!
Notice that your signature says "5 sp" - manual probably??
What I was thinking is that that the normal automatic puts little drag on the engine - probably the torque converter does not work the same going back up? Think this is why you can't push start an automatic?
Are there modifications that can be made to an auto that make this work somehow?

Yes.....you need a smart controller which disengages the overdrive and disengages lockup under full throttle...You Will LIKELY need to do some tranny upgrades if you are doing heavy towing....talk to one of the experts...DTT, ATS or Suncoast....

cobrarep,
I have attached a Document "Warranties and Your Rights" by PacBrake. It is also available at their web site http://www.pacbrake.com/.
I would suggest you contact PacBrake at 1-800-663-0096 if you have further questions on this matter. Their customer service is tops and they design and produce a superior e-brake.
Get answers from the "horses mouth", not someone's opinion.
In D-C's towing guide they state that when towing a trailer more than 10,000#, an e-brake is required. Since they rate all Ram Diesels for towing trailers greater than 10,000#, they have given passive approval.
