Emission test question

Took my truck in for it's first emission test last night here in AZ.. the procedure is called a snap-acceleration test, where they do 3 full throttle readings.. I had a big concern going into redline, and I didn't like the noise it made headed to 3500 rpms.. oh well..

question is this, once I got it to full throttle, and let off the pedal, it would stick at 3500rpm for a few seconds before backing itself off... and I mean an uncomfortable amount of time, like 4-5 seconds.. is this normal?

I passed no problem by the way..

Man those high RPMs would make me nervous too. And if you drive like me the truck has never been wound that tight anyway.

yeah, oddly they make the owner do the test... normally for a gas car/truck the attendant does all the work...

They made me sit in the driver's seat and he'd tell me to floor it, and we practiced it a bit... I was reluctant to go past 3000rpm... he told me to go for it, since the engine is governed.. ah.... ok.....

Sounds like turbo delay. Just like when you put your foot into it when in gear. It takes a couple of seconds for the turbo to wind down after you lift.

Does the technician see the tachometer. I"m temped to put a small block or something discreet under the gas pedal. I have put every mile on the truck since new minus the 11 from the dealer or factory and never been past 2300-2400 RPM. I may be nervous Nelly but I don't like it. Sounds like they make you do the snap test so if it blows up they can say its your fault some how.

Weird, in Cali they (Smog techs) just blip the throttle 3 times and smoke had to dissipate within 3 seconds of let off.

WTH kind of test is that? Man, they are reaching for reasons to fail these trucks if they are going that far in an emissions test. What happens if the engine craters during the test? Im pretty sure the state isn't gonna replace it. No way would I push it past redline, governed or not.

I don't know why they just don't do a road simulation test, like they do for pre-OBD cars... just drive it like normal..

But to answer the question about whether the Tech watches the tachometer, no... but he had me practice a couple of times with him watching.. he didn't let me stop at 3k... he wanted me to "floor it"... "don't worry these engines are governed"...

whatever!

Still don't like the fact the state has me paying them to (ream) my truck in a manor that is not conducive to my driving style. Oh well what r u too do.

Yeah I hear ya pdogg. Ive got mine coming in March and I'm REALLY not looking forward to it. As far as the RPM hang up, yes it is normal. My 05 did it and it scared me. The 06 has never seen 3500 RPM... But it will in March I guess.

Me too! As has been pointed out, the engine is governed but it seems needless.
