early '04 high idle feature??

Anyone here know for sure if you can have the dealer enable the high idle feature on an early 2004 2500 CTD, 48RE? I appreciate anyone's help

If it isn't available there was a reflash to install the feature on truck , I think, back to 03 or so . Quite sure it covered the 04 in all flavors though. Just think the flash adds the high idle enablement feature to the software already onboard. Can't remember the TSB though, maybe someone else can assist with the number and further information....

You have that feature on your ealry 04'. Just go to the dealer and ask to talk directly to the diesel tech. That way he may do it free of charge. My dealer's deisel tech is a diesel gearhead and did mine for free. Works great!

thank you guys for the replies. I did a search and found TSB 18-004-04 which it would seem that I can in fact have the option enabled in the customer preferences menu on the ECM. Still not quite sure I can enable it but I'll find out this afternoon i suppose.

I went to the dealer and have made an appointment to have it done, however the service manager (a friend of mine) said he didn't know if it was available on my year and he'll have to check it with the DRBIII.

Unfortunately I can not ask my local head Dodge Diesel tech because he's an absolute [explitive] moron. He has already informed me that there is no high idle feature on ANY dodge truck....diesel or not....and he almost wizzed himself laughing when I told him it could be controled by the cruise buttons......he looked at me like I was a complete idiot. Of course this is the very same diesel tech that told me I had a vacuum leak in my HYDRO booster ...when I informed him that the line he pointed to was the return line from the booster and it had FLUID in it....he once again laughed and said it was a vacuum line and in fact "you have vacuum all over this truck".

so as you can see...my local diesel tech is an idiot.

You have it. On the DRBIII there is a main menu for enabling or disabling features on the truck such as the high idle and even the door bell when the truck is running. The DRBIII will even give you instructions on how to use the feature as well. It's a VERY good tool if the right person is using it.

if it's pre 04.5 you will need to have the ECM flash first then the high idle can be enable via dbrIII . Take the TSB http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-004-04.htm along with you then they will know what you are talking about. complain about poor in cab warm up and then they should apply the tsb mentioned.

Well my friend (sort of) the service manager plugged into the truck and started fussin around with the computer. He couldn't find it. He had never heard of it before (not very common in Florida I don't think) and the head diesel tech said these trucks don't have it...sigh....

SOOOO.....I encouraged Mike (service manager) to keep looking. He found it in the Engine Management Misc.

No TSB....no reflash....no nuttin.

All he had to do was click {enable} and poof!

It works like a charm.....even after he unplugged he didn't believe me LOL

I told him how it was supposed to work....and voila....works great...starts out at 1100 rpm and you can adjust it to 1500 with the decel/accel cruise buttons.

Best of all.....he charged me .....squadoosh, nuttin, zip, and zero

cool little feature, what I can't figure out is why it isn't standard to enable it? Maybe it's to not encourage idleing? Who knows.

Anyway, thanks guys, especially Cowboy, I wouldn't have actually pushed him so hard to find it if you guys hadn't assured me it was in there somewhere.

You should take the "diesel tech" out to your truck and show him your high idle powered vacuum! I had to tell the "techs" how to do anything I've needed turned on or changed with the drb its SAD.

yah, I should tell him (the head diesel tech) that I hooked up a shop vac to the hydrobooster which is driven off the muffler belt drive which is slaved to the hydrobooster vacuum sector to obtain a high idle feature. I think that dope thinks "high idle" means smoking grass sitting in a parking lot with the engine running

You know....I get so tired of dealing with inept people, especially those who are "certified" to know more about this crap than me...but that's not the worst of it....what really bakes my squash is when someone doesn't know anything they really only have two good options.....please....say it...say..."I DON'T KNOW!" or...just don't say anything.

This is why one of my favorite sayings is: "It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear to be a fool....then to open your mouth and remove all doubt." -author unknown

Glad they got you squared away and free of charge.

GreyTD the feature is already setup in the Cummins ECM. No reflashes are needed. Just to turn it on and off that's it.

Now to the guys with manuals. From my understanding the manual truck do not have this feature from what my service tech told me. I tried to get it turned on for my 06 but the feature was not listed when the DRBIII was hooked up. We even left the DRBIII plug in and went to the PC to try and get in further. No luck. So with that I don't let the truck idle to much.

TC for some reason some do some don't need the flash. On mine they needed to do the flash first then enable it. In fact they messed up sort of, they did the flash but forgot to enable, tech came out to truck turned it on and away I went. For the manuals there is a mod (jumper) that needs to be installed first on the tranny then I think they turn on the pto feature which is the same or something like that, need to do search for better details, but it can be done on manuals also.
