Dual Filter Setup (Fleetguard & Cat)

Finally finished my dual filter setup consisting of a Fleetguard FF5320 (5 micron absolute) and a Cat 1R-0750 (4 micron absolute). You can see my old setup with a single Fleetguard FF5320 (now available for sale) post #50 of this thread https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...=185308&page=4 and my new dual filter setup.

My next project is a dual FWS under the truck by the t-case.

ah64id, I know you will read this, what ya think?I purged about two quarts of fuel to get some of the junk from the new line and JIC connectors prior to connecting the final line to the CP3. She ran perfectly and no leaks! I am a little concerned however with vibrations on the Cat filter and JIC connectors and line as it is towards the end of my bracket. It does vibrate when the engine is idling. Maybe I just need to keep an eye on it.

Keep in mind that there is about 5-6 pounds hanging off that bracket. It looks well constructed, nice job. My biggest concern would be the mounting off of the side of the head, how many bolts?, into aluminum? what is the footprint? Is there a way to decrease the overhang from the engine?

Carry on with the overkill, looks nice.

I estimated about 8 lbs of weight with both filters full of fuel with the filter head, the weight of the bracket about 10 lbs with associated JIC fittings and hoses. The bracket will hold as it is made from 1/4” steel. It mounted directly to the steel head to those three empty bolts directly in front of the aluminum manifold. It could use additional bolts and I will rig something up later to add strength to the footprint.. The reason for the long overhang is once I use up my supply of Flettguard FF5320 I will switch to cat 1R-0749 which is longer than the Flettguard FF5320 and I need the room to clear the -6 JIC connector to the CP3. It is definitely not perfect but it will do for now and I will probably redesign the bracket later. Thanks jballou for your comments/suggestions.

I know it might be an overkill but better to have excess filtration than not enough.

I run the Fleetguard FF5320 filter Glacier kit mounted on the Glacier air horn.

Isn't the FF5320 filter rated at 2 micron?

Nope! That’s what most people think and they don't even bother checking the data sheet. I have the data sheet for the Fleetguard 5320 and it is rated @ 2 micron nominal and 5 micron absolute while both the Cat 1R-050 and the larger Cat 1R- rated @ 4micron absolute according to the new testing protocol. This is what I got from Cat: There has been a change in the testing procedures for filtration products industry wide. We can no longer effectively measure particulates smaller than 4 microns. This is not a Cat thing - it is an industry wide change. So what we used to call our 2 micron filter is now actually a 4 micron filter. Again there was no change to the product - only to the testing process.

Interesting info about the new rating system.

Do you know how the "7 micron" Fleetguard fuel filter that drops in the factory fuel filter cannister is now rated?

Joe,

From reading what Cat sent me, I don't believe the ratings above 4 microns are affected but I could be wrong. I don't know what P/N filter you are using in the OEM cannister. Get the datasheet from Fleetguard to be sure. Make sure you are looking at the absolute figure which is over 98.7% efficiency. I know Fleetguard FF5320 says 2 micron printed on the filter but that is only @ 92% efficiency. It is actually a 5 micron absolute @ 98.7% filter.

I have a similar set up with a Cat 1R750 element (only 1 though) between the factory filter and the CP3. I cut the Cat filter open after 15000 kilometers (9500)miles and there was some dirt in the pleats. not a lot but what was there got through the factory filter with the first generation element. I believe they were 10 microns then and now they are 7. When I installed mine I was under the impression that I was putting on a 2 micron element but I also found out that it is really a 4 micron absolute element.
