I'm having issues with the P2509 code and the truck cutting out while driving. Just installed new batteries yesterday, which seemed to fix it until this morning when it cut out three times on the way to work.

Anyone have any additional information on this P2509 issue? I'm getting it intermittently only in cold weather. I've put in new batteries and sent it to the dealer for a checkup and they couldn't figure out what's wrong with it because they couldn't replicate the problem.

One thing I did notice is that when the truck is first started up, the tach will fluctuate between around 500-750 rpm with no change in the sound of the motor. Could this be something to check into somehow?

There is a TSB on this 18-001-07

Flash: Check Gauges Lamp Illuminates For Alternator Charging With DTC P2502, P2503,
or P2509
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control
Module (Cummins PCM) with new software.
MODELS:
2006 - 2007 (DH/D1) Ram Truck (2500 / 3500)
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 5.9L engine (sales code
ETH) built on or before November 29, 2006 (MDH 1129XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience the illumination of the “Check Gauges” lamp on the
instrument panel cluster. Inspection of the gauges may reveal that the battery charging
gauge may read in the 11 volt range rather than in the 14 volt range. There may not be a
Check Engine / Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination.
Further diagnosis may reveal the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) have been
set:
P2502 - Charging System Error - Diesel
P2503 - Charging System Output Low - Diesel
P2509 - Powerdown Data Lost Error - Diesel

I have attached the diagnostic literature regarding the P2509 fault code.

I'm assuming the dealer mechanic has this documentation right? Perhaps I'll bust out my multimeter and run through the P2509 diagnostic tests. What book/manual did that .pdf come from?

Yes! Any Chrysler/Dodge dealer will have the TSB documentation. The pdf documents are from the Dodge Ram Service Manual.

Since you recently replaced the batteries, remove and clean any corrosion from the cable ends(terminals) including the battery (Grounds off first). Then use a wire brush or battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the cable ends and battery terminals. Re install and tighten the terminals (ground cables on last).
