dripping oil out of tube under engine
after 6200 miles on my oil change I drop a little over a qt. of oil this includes towing a heavy trailer for 555miles. Looking on my garage floor I saw oil drops.I look under the engine and there is a plastic tube with drops of oil dripping out.Is this normal? Is this was causing my oil going down a qt.Is this the oil bypass tube?Truck has 68,000 miles on it.Thanks in advance.

Yes, the tube you describe is the vent tube. It is NORMAL to see a drop or 2 come out after a hard tow, etc. It is NOT normal to lose a quart out of that tube. If you see a puddle out of the tube there is a problem. Rings have been compromised etc... Now, if it has been 6200 miles since oil change and you have not added any oil. Summer time temps, heavy towing, 1 quart is not really an alarming amount of oil to use. My 2007 5.9 burns about a 1/4 of a quart in 4,000 miles towing... Hope that helps... But I never get a drop out of the tube and I send in Oil analysis every oil change. Might pull a sample and have it looked at

Is your oil level normal? If it is high, you may have an injector leaking by. Oil analysis can also confirm that there is or is not an injector issue (fuel dilution), if the oil level looks normal.

Thanks guys, when I did the oil change I put 11qts in the pan and 1qt in the filter for a total of 12qts Then after 5645 of non towing miles I tow for 555miles totaling 6200 miles on the oil change. The oil reading on the dip stick went from right at the full mark to the letter S on the word safe of the dip stick. The oil looks clean,I have the early 2004 so it dose not get black even after 6200 miles. So I dont think its diluted. It was still in the safe zone, but I added over a qt of oil and I almost toped it off.I am using a CI4+ oil.

My truck would smell when I would run 12 qts but never used any. I went to 10 qts in the engins and 1 in the filter and the smell is almost gone, maybe try running one less qt and see what happens, maybe your engine will be happier there.

Rotella?
Back to original subject. My '98 12 valve dripped from the vent tube for the 105K miles I had it. When my '06 began the drip, I cut part of the neck off a pint plastic bottle so it fit the tube quite loosely. With the tube sticking about 1/2 way into the bottle, I tied it in place. The bottle now catches virtually all the drips but still breathes nicely. Clean garage floor. After close to 20K miles there probably isn't more than a tablespoonful of oil in the bottle.
