DO you like your 48re?
I'm with TexasCTD. I like my 48re but could be better. I have added the TC lockup switch and that has helped in some cases. When locked, it cools down much faster. I plan on getting the OD lockout switch next. I do miss driving in 3rd without it going into OD when I am just cruising around town.
I had a DTT 47re in my 1st gen. That was a rockin tranny by all means. I miss that tranny in a big way. I plan on getting one for my 05, but just not in the budget this year.... or even next year.
But one will find its way back behind my Diesel again some day. DTT rocks.

Ilike the way the 48re tows in my 06. I like it much better than the allison in my 04 duramax. it just seems to do a better job even though the allison has one more gear. but thats just me. the chevy has over 150k and the 06 dodge has over 35k. I have no problem with the way the 48re shifts.
Dieseldo, I look at your post and that is the same thing I found out about the 06 dodge and my 04 chevy. I hated how the allison seemed to never be in the right gear when I was towing. Every one seems to be on this 6 speed auto ban wagon. But to me that is just more gears to go through while down shifting. The 48re is a 4 speed auto and when you hit a hill it down shifts 1 time and never even misses a lick. The 2 48re that I had were both good to me. The only thing that I didn't like about them was once in a while the shifted "very" firm. It felt like it was going to tear the whole truck in half. That was the only thing that I liked better about the allison. It did shift smoother.
Maybe everybody has different experiences with their own 48RE, but like I said, im happy with mine.
For me...my tq converter locks at almost exactly 50mph....and then my truck feels like a rocket. If I am pulling kinda hard...say on the expressway....I can just slightly let off the accelerator at around 50..it will shift into od....and off we go.
My only complaint at all.....is when starting off from a stop in slow moving situations and starting to pull a hill it wants to rev the engine higher than I feel is necessary. I assume that is that loose factory tq converter. I know DTT has a nice fix for that.
And......since I have bitten by the bombing bug...I want to upgrade it to handle the power it will eventually see. But that is not DC's fault that im trying to make a 600+ hp, 8100lb racecar out of it.

Well just like a couple of you guys said, I also had an 04 chevy and now an 06 dodge and I actually like the 48RE better than the allison. The allison always seemed to hunt for the right gear and then would never stay there.
I traded in my 05 with 15,000 miles and a NV5600 manual transmission and bought back an auto.
The manual was notchy shifting, way to slow shifting waiting for gears to mesh, loosing boost between shifts. Parts becoming harder to find and more expensive since they discontinued it.
With the auto I just put it in gear and drive, the computer knows exactly when and where the transmision should be.

I like the 48RE as well. It did do some funny shifts now and again, but it tows like a champ. Things got even better when I installed my Juice. On settings 1 to 3 a good 48RE turns to a great 48RE. But I am scared of settings 4 to 5 and dare I say 6. Then the great 48RE will be a fried 48RE
