Different Oil Question.
As I posted on here before, I got 28 free Oil changes with Oil filter & lube with my extended warranty. They actually miss counted and gave me 29.
The last change was not done by the tech who usually takes care of me, he was out sick, so they put a young guy on the job. I wasn't there when he poured the oil in due to speaking with a salesman who always is bothering me to get me in a new truck every time I go in there.
Anyway, 2k miles into the new oil change and the idiot oil guage is reading a much lower than usual pressure when idling. It now sits on the first hatch mark rather than a little higher. Very noticable to me.
Is there a "cheap" way to find out if they put the right oil in there?? I put a LOT of money into the truck last year and can't afford expensive lab tests. I'm thinking that I should just go back and express my concern and have them change the oil again, but they probably would want to spend some more of my money trying to diagnose a problem. What kind of damage could happen if they put the wrong oil in?? It could be just my paranoia, but this last trip the engine seemed to "chatter" a bit louder too. Plus it put quite a bit more soot on the trailer than normal. I want to catch any potential problem ASAP!!
Pushing 294K on the clock.
Thanks for your help.

Take it back if your not comfortable with the gauge reading. I would think if the wrong oil was put in (maybe 10w30?) then you would have noticed it right away and not 2000 miles later. Or change the oil yourself to save some money. $30-$40 is pretty cheap insurance to make sure you have the right oil. But it may also be the oil pump or sending unit with that many miles on the engine. Just my opinion.
I guess I'm asking, what would I notice?? And would the wrong weight oil cause any problems?? Now or in the future?? If so, then what recourse would I have and what to do. Having the dealer do the oil changes was VERY convenient as I don't have that much time or the place to do such maintenence. I usually do the fuel & air filters in the NAPA parking lot!!
Would a different weight oil burn faster?? Cause smoke?? More soot out the exhaust?? The beast usually burns almost a quart by the time it needs changing @ 10k miles.

You can get an oil analysis sample kit mailed to you. Take a sample of oil and for around $20 get the oil analyzed.
If you let monkeys touch your truck you had dang well check behind them. When they pull your truck out of the bay, pop the hood and check the oil level. Those jokers could care less about your truck. They are there to do their job from 8-5 and get home.
NO ONE TAKES CARE OF YOUR TRUCK LIKE YOU WOULD!!!!!
If you want something right you gotta do it yourself.
I invite anyone and everyone to go to Bob is the Oil Guy and learn about oils, and filtration. Best of luck.

Yes, thinner oil is gonna get by the rings and burn faster and easier than thicker oil. More soot. Just have them change the oil and this time watch what they put in.
I recommend developing a relationship with the autoBoss at your local Walmart (or equivilent). Once you've established a rapport with him they will take care of you very well (at least mine does).
I bring in my fleetguard oil filter and ask for (and get)a Delo 400 oil change for about 47 $'s. At first you should watch them add the oil to make sure you're not getting "super tech" and check the filter and the oil level before you leave.
I got tired of having the envrionmental disaster in my driveway!!

My advice - Just change the oil and filter and be done with it. there is no way to tell the oil weight without getting it analyzed. The oil analysis costs you more than half of what changing the oil would cost.
Hopefully the dealer will be sympathetic and take care of you.

I wonder if getting ahold of Terry Dyson over at Bob Is The Oil Guy.com might not be a bad idea? He does, in-depth oil analysis with explanations of what was found. He might be able to tell you whether an oil analysis will give you the information you need regarding whether or not the dealer used the proper oil. If they used the wrong oil & it damaged your engine, if you have proof of that (via analysis), you might have grounds for legal recourse.
I'd, at least, have a couple of samples of the oil that's in the engine, now.

Thanks for your replies & help. Spoke to the dealer. Getting the oil & filter changed again, on the dealer's dime. They checked with the "tech" who said he put the right oil in. They treat me pretty good.
I'm just concerned about any damage to the engine or turbo putting about 2k miles on it with "possibly" the wrong weight oil. It would be easy to hide with the mileage that's on the truck.
