Exclamation Diesel Kleen!?

So I filled up the truck the day before yesterday at a 1/4 of a tank. I haven't run any PowerService or other additives for a while, but I picked up a bottle of Diesel Kleen while I was at the store to the other day so I decided to add some. While checking the instructions on the back, I noticed it said that you could add the whole bottle without any problems. Well, I added the whole bottle to a full tank of fuel (added after filling, which could be part of the problem). I don't know if anyone else has ever run into this and if it's related to the DK or the fuel I bought, but immediately after pulling out of the filling station the truck started running like a piece of crap. While accelerating from the dead stop the truck would cut out and buck until I was able to acclerate through it and it would kind of "catch up" and take off. Everything seemed okay while crusing at high speeds on level ground, but as soon as I had to slow down and then speed up again it would keep cutting out. I was on a 200 mile trip, which I completed and as soon as I got back home I pulled into the filling station and filled up the tank again to try and dilute the additive (or that was my thought anyway). So now I had a good news, bad news situation. The good news is that the truck ran much, much better after adding the fuel - no more cutting out and ran like normal. The bad news is, that the truck is difficult to start now. I didn't think I was going to get it started the first time I shut it off after adding the DK. I had to crank it for a full 5+ seconds to get it running. Once it's running it runs fine. Now, a couple days later, I still have to crank it for 3 seconds to get it up and running. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a fuel filter thing? I just changed the fueld filter 3,000 miles ago, but didn't know if the additive might have screwed it up? Was this a DK thing or a bad fuel thing? Any thoughts on how I can get the truck starting back to normal? Thanks guys.

Thomas

Sounds like the fuel and fuel station, run it empty fill up somewhere else run diesel kleen and once you get all the old fuel out change the fuel filter. Pointless to change the fuel filter with bad fuel still in the tank. If you want to take it futher you might be able to bring it up to the fuel station in question. Just my thoguhts someone else might have better insight but thats what this forum is for, to get different opinions right.

I used that same additive when I purchased my truck. I did add the entire bottle. No problems. Sounds like the diesel from the station or a filter.

Sounds like bad fuel and/or a clogged fuel filter. I have run power service (white or gray bottle) in almost every tank since my truck was new.

ive tried it twice in my 05 both times the engine would shake like 1 or 2 injectors were not firing correctly, ive stopped using all additives and truck runs better, dont know why and its not my imagination playing tricks on me.

If you haven't run any type of fuel additive in a while...

It sounds like the "Kleen" did it's job and cleaned everything out and clogged your fuel filter.

i dont think so, i have 2 other non common rail diesel trucks that dont do this with any type of additive. my 05 does this only when an additive is used as well as 2stroke, the 2 stroke oil actually makes it shake worse. Im just not a believer anymore in overpriced naptha/kerosene additives.

I run 12 oz. of the grey bottle and 8 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil (or as close as I can tell without measurin). I add this every tank until I run out and then run several tanks with nothin. Seems to start a little quicker when treated, but can tell no other differences (mileage, engine noise, etc.).

Really doubt the Diesel Kleen had anything to do with anything, unless, like posted above, it did its job. I always use the recommended amount, but at times when its well below zero, I double up on it. There have been a few 3 or 4 times over the few years since I bought the truck new that I dumped a full gallon into the tank, just to see what would happen. All is good and am a firm believer in it.

I also have had no problems with the DK. I have never really measured it correctly (because I am lazy) and kind of glurged it into the tank before or after I fueled. I always wind up using more than I should (it says it’s a lubricant). I want to say I actually get better mileage with it but have never actually hand calculated it.

Definitely a fuel problem. I have run 16 oz. per tank since its first fill up and I have never had a problem. Having too much shouldn't hurt though, it's better to have too much than too little.

To the OP, I have had issues before when using DK. I stopped using it for a couple years. It turns out though it wasn't the DK, I had some bad injectors. I just recently tried DK again and had no issues. The difference is I had 6 new injectors put in a while back. The injectors also cured the hard start issue, and the white smoke and rough idle on cold start issue.

I have used the Kleen "Gray" stuff every time I fill up. I have had no problems at all.

Update on this Price Dog?

I'm sure you who use it every tank haven't had a problem...

But most of these fuel additives are solvent based...

Solvent's clean things very well.

I'm sure most of you know what the consciences of this will be.

I think it depends on how big the bottle of DK was and the size of the fuel tank. Diesel clean in the 3 quart size is supposed to treat 200-300 gallons like one finds on a big rig. That much of the stuff in a 40 gallon pickup tank would be a little much.....
