Did a BHAF on a 03 last night
just passing the word that NAPA 6637 air filter which is a smaller version of the one on my 02, barely fit on the 03 cummins last night- but it works just fine.

this 6637 filter has a 4 inch inlet, and the factory rubber hose also has a 4 inch inlet, but with a little stretching it went right over the hole- then the factory clamp will not fit, so we just used 2- 2 1/2 inch hose clamps and made one larger 5 inch hose clamp

all you do is pull the 1 10mm nut off at the front of the factory air box, and pull the entire box up and out-

the 03's have a air inlet temp sensor, which we have temporarily tied to the front core support-
i will post back when we drill the 1/2 inch hole in the 6637 filter to mount the air inlet temp sensor.
BRYAN

from the rear end dyno, it does seem to spool quicker, and at least there is something to listen to under the hood :

the air filter is 2 feet or more from the turbo, so i dont think a heat shield is necessary

the plastic on the ends of the filter, is thick heavy duty 1/4 inch or better- i have been running the BHAF on my 2002 for 2 months and its 6 inches from the turbo with NO HEAT SHIELD- ive towed over 2000 miles and there is enough air flow thru the engine bay to keep the outer area around the filter cool to the touch
once i get the chance to work on the 03 truck [daily driver] i will take some pics for you guys to see it-

we did have to work at getting the factory rubber elbow over the 4 inch filter, because they are both 4 inch!!

BRYAN

Re:Did a BHAF on a 03 last night
The BHAF filters are used on commerical cummins and marine engines. The are a paper type throw any filter. The ones for my boat cost $70 each and I am thinking about converting to an AEF on my boat. I will have to add a plastic extension to mount a different type filter. Cummins Marine needs to make it so the filter or extension can screw on to the turbo. I have always had a problem with the filters coming loose and falling off on my boat after running thru heavy sea's. The clamps don't hold vary well. I could slow down but that would take all the fun out of the ride.

When Scott and I were looking at filter locations, my first thought was that an open filter would want a heat shield, but not to shield from the turbo heat. I think I'd want one stuffed beside the rad/cooler to deflect that hot air away from filter element.

Rod

no complaints about having the open filter with no heat shield yet-

im pretty sure that at 40 mph and above on this 03, there will be enough fresh air flowing to the open filter-
no need for a heat shield just yet-

i made a 800 mile trip to arkansas about 1 month ago with my 02 in the sig-
i had just installed the BHAF on it, and deleted the fan a few months ago when we had a cold snap here back in october-

well, i still dont have a heat shield on it, i dont have a fan on it, and i got caught hauling a car with trailer in st. louis dead stop traffic for 45 minutes-
it was 63 degrees out that night!!!!!
the truck never went over the tic before 190 even sitting in dead stop traffic, and i never shut the truck off
granted i did have the heater cranked up, cause i was chomping at the bit that she might over heat-

no problems yet on either truck-

but once this summer hits i will be making a heat shield out of diamond plate to keep the heat off my BHAF on the 02

CHEERS
