Ok well I have been getting a bad smell from my right rear brake assembly and one day it was smoking. So I took the truck in thinking I got a bad pad or a stuck caliper or something

Dealer calls me back says I got a axcel seal that went bad and that its leaking on my brakes. So I have them fix it, today dealer calls me and says that the reason for the bad seal was that I put wrong fluid in. I explained I used mobil 1 and it was the right weight and met OEM requirments. He responds saying the mechanic said it was wrong fluid and it should smell like bubble gum and that the fluid that I put in killed the seal. Then tells me since we r in there fixing the one we should fix the other one cause it will prob fail soon due to the non OEM fluid I put in.

I'm calling BS on the fluid being the culprit and that they r just trying to rape me for some cash in this crappy economy. Has anybody had probs with the mobil diff oil and or been told the rear ends r real particular what fluids they like. Dealer got me for $900 and wants another $460 to fix the other seal that has not broke yet but suposidly will LOL.

i call bs cause i have been running amsoil since 90k and i dont have any leaks, never replaced any seals i now have 210k

 

B.S i have been running mobil 1 for 40000 miles most all towing. no seal leaks. there just trying to get more money. and the fact that it should smell like bubble gum is even worse. i have never met a gear oil that smelled good.

 

I run mobil 1 in my 06 ram for over 30,000 mi. no leaks.

 

the dealer is a crack head. call the BBB and file a complaint. contact Mobile and tell them the story and see what they say and or can provide.

BS! I've been using Mobil 1 75W90 LS for the last 120,000 miles, no problems. I change it every 30,000 miles.

I did have my right axle seal go out at about 140,000 miles and had an independent shop fix it (I think they charged $200-$300, don't remember the exact amount off-hand) and the left seal is still the original. I'm at about 168,000 miles right now.

 

The shop manager is smoking something that is Illegal, no way did Mobil 1 gear oil cause the seal to go out. Find your self a new dealer ASAP.

 

I can't belive the prices there chargering for an axle seal. there really easy to change on the rear end.

 

I would say BS. Also just a note, I have done several fords(1/2tons) and they had the stock fluid in them, I run the same stuff you run in both my truck axles and my car's tranny, no leaks.

 

Totyal BS. If the gears were chewed up or excessivly worn, then maybe you could make a case for incorrect fluid. Maybe. But this dealer is just wrong about that.

I don't see that there's any financial advantage to him telling you that, though. It's not warrenty work. The job and cost is the same regardless of the reason. The seal failed and sprayed the brake rotors, then the pads are ruined and need to be replaced.

Personally, I would go ahead and replace the other side, too. If one fails, the other is usually not far behind. Why wait until it ruins another set of brake pads?

If it were my truck, I'd want to know why it happened, though. It could be a bad axle bearing, seal surface, or some debris in the pumpkin. Maybe it's just a clogged vent. If you know the real reason, you can prevent it from happening again.

If it were still under warrenty, then the dealer could be trying to get out of paying for that. But, if a specific fluid is required to maintain the warrenty, then the dealership is required to provide it to you.

 

How many miles on your truck? I have been changing them under warranty. They leak with correct fluid in diff, there is problem with the seal and Chrysler knows this. They are asking for every seal replaced under warranty to be returned to Chrysler to find out why so many are failing.

I don't know why it happened but I'm gonna ask them some ?'s u pointed out and c if they fixed the bearing etc. The pads they did not replace originaly they said nothing was wrong and that some greese got on the pads and was causing the prob so they cleaned everything and were gonna send me home. I asked then to get my fluid flushed and when the mechanic started he then found the real reason for the prob and figured out the axel seal prob. Time to find a new dealer for sure

 

I would highly suspect a mechanic sniffing rears and smelling bubble gum.

Tell them to fix it and quit yanking your chain or take it somewhere else and make sure corporate and the BBB know what they are up to. About all you can do.
