Dealer Oil Change

The dealer is trying to sell me on a lifetime oil change for $549. I can change the oil 4x/year or every 3000 miles.

1. Would you go for this?
2. Are there better aftermarket oils I can use that would be better than what the dealer would use?

Thanks

Re:Dealer Oil Change

At 4x/year if Ihave calculated correctly the breakeven point in cost is probably at 2.5 years and I plan on keeping the truck for at least 5 years

Re:Dealer Oil Change

In that case I'd say go for it. I didn't check your calcs....but based on what you said you'd have 2.5 years of free oil changes. Plus....if there's ever an issue with the oil or anything then the dealership can't say anything because they're the ones changing it. There might be BETTER oils out there....but you'll know that the oil they use is what's specified for the engine. Plus...I think you could run Quaker State through it and it still last five years for you....

Re:Dealer Oil Change

It does seem a square deal. However, I am always skeptical of anything the Stealers are offering. They are looking out for the dealer and not you.

But this oil change offer does seem like it's fair.

2 cents

Re:Dealer Oil Change

Do it yourself and use better oil than the dealers bulk oil they'll put in your truck. Who knows if they'll use the same kind each time, or overfill your oil, etc. Hate to sound so skeptical, but do it yourself and you know it's done correctly, and it's cheaper. Get some good quality synthetic oil like Delvac 1 or Amsoil etc in there after it's had a chance to break in...and smile as you rack up the miles =] If you really don't want to float the extra cash for synthetic oil(which seems incredibly cheap for someone in a $45k truck), there are a few good dino diesel oils out there like delo 400, delvac 1300, good ol rotella, etc lol. I highly recommend the synthetics though, especially for longer drain intervals.

Re:Dealer Oil Change

The dealer I bought my truck from gives oil changes for FREE for the lifetime that you own the vehicle. He will follow the manual on it though, and will probably opt for the 7500 or even 15000 mile intervals...so I will just do it myself.

I have my Amsoil oil filters already in the garage, and once I get past the first 2 oil changes (5000 miles and 12500 miles) I will be switching to synthetic (Rotella T). Not that the free oil changes is a good deal, I just like to use better products that what the dealers use.

And as far as the extended oil change intervals, don't plan on that as I was told right out that the oil had better be changed every 7500 miles if used for towing, or 15000 for light duty. If I was to try to go to a double by-pass filter and all that fun stuff the warranty would be voided if something was to fail that was oil related.

Re:Dealer Oil Change

The oil change at the $549 is for every 3000 miles or 4x/year.

I have always heard that although synthetics (which I use in every one of my other vehicles) does not extend the lenght becuase it is the contamination that dictates the change at 3 or 7.5 thousand. The synthetic is resistent to viscosity breakdown longer but will be too "dirty". SO.....

I dont know that going to synthetic is "better" unless you stick to 3000k interval changes. Otherwise any good oil changed at 3K should perform just as well. It may breakdown faster but you change it often enough that it does not matter and it stays cleaner than say synthetic changed every 7500.

Now move synthetic to every 3K and how many want to spend $4/quart for ? how many quarts per change?

I'm new to diesels, but the Schedule B side of the manual...which has the more frequent oil changes...clearly says the oil change interval is 7,500 miles. If you go to Schedule A, it's every 15,000 miles. The ONLY ones that they recommend more frequently than that are the enginges with California LEV...which are to be changed every 3,750 miles. So why waste your money changing the oil every 3,000 miles if it's not necessary??

Re:Dealer Oil Change

Then I stand corrected. Didn't see it so I can't comment on it any more either.
