Dealer installed exhaust brake, questions
the brake works great but I lost horsepower(bigDynoButt) and it seems to have more engine braking now than before without having the ex. brake on.
Is the butterfly restricting the exhaust? Seems like egts has gone up........ is there an adjustment?
Feels like I have losted 20 or more ponies........
Exhaust is Dodges by Cummins
and I hear searing sound thru the Exhaust????????
thanks

The hissing sound from the tail pipe is normal with the brake activated. It should sound like normal exhaust when it is not activated. Is there a hissing sound when the exhaust brake is not on? If there is (not sure from your post) then the control soloid might be defective or hook up wrong. Just because the dealer did it doesn't mean it is hooked up right. Dig out the directions and check all the connections including those on the ECM.

Yes, the exhaust note is different, so if the soloid is bad would the butterfly not to opening all the way???
thanks balvert

the e brake is spring open vac close. If it were partially closed (casting flaw or broken spring) you would have a partial hiss at idle with ebrake off. If the trucks sounds normal with brake off it is probably installed correctly. Did they disconnect the batteries when they did the work? Maybe the computer needs to relearn.
I think I read somewhere that Jacob claims no loss in power or significant loss of flow with their valve. I've heard others talk of a one or two hp loss on the dyno, and I would guess that might be the vacuum pump that has to be added to the gen 3's.
My truck had no noticeable change, so I think if you really think you lost a bunch of power, something is wrong.
Also, the directions say to disconnect the batteries before pulling apart a plug to tap into keyed power, and says that failure to do so would set error codes (and presumably the check engine light would be on).
Can you see if the actuator is moving all the way when you turn it on and off? I understand some exhaust brakes can get carboned up from lack of use, but they usually stick open. I guess if in doubt, you could always pull the passenger front wheel and fender liner (careful to unclip the anti-lock wires) and pull her out and take a look to see that it is fully open.
Also, on the solenoid there is a little brass filter thing, which is apparently how air gets let back into the diaphragm when the brake is deactivated and vacuum is no longer applied. Could it have gotten clogged or dirty?
Lastly, I guess I would inspect everything the dealer did. You can download installation directions from Jacob if the dealer didn't give them to you here:

Hope any of this helps...

The truck is getting slower and slower,,,,, seems like the engine is braking more withOUT the e brake, also it seems my brakes are not as effective as before the install,,, brakes are working with a 20 to 30% loss.....
thanks in advance
