Dealer/Driveshaft, need opinions

I need an opinion if I getting screwed or not. Im a college student athlete so I have one truck and not alot of time. I blew the carrier bearing on the drive shaft a few days ago. Was going to get it into the shop this mornin, that was the plan anyways. Well yesterday morning at 6:00 am the drive shaft snapped the cradle for the carrier bearing, fell, blew out the senter ujoint and came apart. I pulled over on the side of the road. Got rides from buddies to and from school and ball. Then yesterday evening me and a buddy went and took the drive shaft off and towed it to the closest shop, unfortunately for me that was the dodge dealer. Told them it needed a new carrier bearing, cradle, and ujoint and all put back together.

Got a call from them today saying that I needed a whole new driveshaft. I asked to speak the the mechanic to find out what was wrong with it but he wasnt in (went to lunch). They are spose to call me back when he gets in. When I took the driveshaft off everything looked fine, just a little scared from the road.

What do yall think, are they tryin to screw me? I mean this dealer aint anything like my dealer back home. When I asked for a loaner car, they said they have rentals from across the street. When I looked at the paper work dodge marks it up 10% from what the place actually rents them for. And talkin everyone they just seam like they are tryin to screw you. I mean to replace the carrier bearing it was going to be $400 even after I already had the driveshaft off, but I dont have the time to take it anywhere else. Im going to have them show me what is wrong with the shaft if they still say it needs a new one, but everything I saw looked fine. Is there anything in particular I should look at?

What dealer did you take it too? How much do they want for it? If you can, price out a new dshaft from an online source, provide the printout to the dealer so they can verify its legit and ask if they'd price match. Speak to the Service Manager.

No clue if you need a new shaft. Chances are since it feel off while driving, they feel it got damaged. So in order to warranty all the work and parts they'll replace on both ends of the shaft, they want to be certain the shaft is going to be good and warrantable (word?) along with the other new parts.

Good luck though. A new 2pc dshaft is over $500

It could be it got tweeked when it dropped. Anyway if the shop feels it is questionable they probably don't want to put it all back together and have it vibrate.

If one section is bent, both have to be replaced as they are balanced as an assembly.

Ohh, you're out there. Well the warranty I mentioned was the parts/labor warranty after they do a repair. If they reuse parts for the repair it compromises the new parts. So you might end up with a repair that breaks in a week.

Does the driveshaft still balance out? Are the splines or joints jacked up? Go ahead and ask them. Heck, explain it to them you can't afford anew dshaft so you really need the old one to work! I wonder if there are any guys in Lubbock area with a stock shaft who've done the 1pc mod. Who couldhelp you out with their old dshaft.

that would be great if someone had one layin around. If I ended up having to put a new driveshaft under it. Would it be cheaper to change it to a one piece? What are some goods and bads about a one piece, besides the fact that there is less to break?

I went to the one piece, the best mod you could possibly do. Get rid of that center carrier and ALL the headaches that go with it.

You do not mention in your sig whether you have an auto or standard tranny, so, here are the correct part numbers to fit you truck for both one-pievce shafts that will fit the 06 trannys.

auto - 5212 3220 AB
std - 5213 3162 AA

The one-piece will cost a little more than your quote from them, but you will never look back or under your truck with a driveshaft problem again. 15 min max install, 4 bolts at the rear yoke, remove the carrier assy mount entirely. That is all it took for me to do the job completely, also a couple 15mm wrenches.

I have an auto tranny. You think it will cost more for an after market one piece than it will for a two piece from the dealer? Where do I get a one piece from?

The one piece driveshaft is not aftermarket it's a factory part for later year trucks that can be retrofitted to earlier year trucks. Try doghousediesel.com or Mopar4less.com they two good sources. You are much better going with the one piece it is more durable and you dont have to worry about a carrier bearing grenading on you again. http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...riveshaft.html

The part numbers I gave you will fit your truck. They are Dodge/Chrysler part numbers. As was mentioned above ^^ you can get the ds from Dodge, doghouse diesel, mopar4less, and other dodge/mopar websites.

well they never called me back so I called them. Said that for sure I needed a new drive shaft and they want $1600 , I told them not to touch my truck anymore and I would come pick it up as soon as I could. Talked to a buddy and he told me that his dad got a single piece at doghouse and to go there. I went on there and lucky me, they are for sale for $565. Gonna try and order one tomorrow. 6in Aluminum!

oh yea, I also asked the dodge house if they do single piece drive shafts and they told me no.

Dodge will only replace your driveshaft with what was in it originally. Get your truck out of there, install the shaft you get from doghouse, and always keep that DODGE DEALERSHIP sign in your rear view mirror as you pass it because you really don't need their redundancy. They used the exact same drivshaft as you are getting from doghouse diesel in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 models, that is how/why we all know about changing over to them, we got the partnumbers that fit those models and changed over to them. Rich at doghouse is a really great guy, he will take good care of you.

Definitely get your truck and do your own driveshaft. Let us know how it goes.

Just got time to order the shaft today, should be here Thursday. Sucked payin the dealership $90 for nothin. Only reason I took it there was because it was around the corner from where I dropped the shaft. After this order with shipping and the $90 charge at the dealer I will be saving almost $900!
