Dealer Costs for Recent Service -- OUCH!!!

Just got back from dealer to have my 15K service performed. Here's what was done and what it cost:

Engine oil/filter changed
Rear Diff oil changed - synthetic
Front diff oil changed - synthetic
New Fuel filter
New Air filter
Tires rotated & balanced

Total Cost......................$430.00!!!!!

I need to start learning to do this stuff myself!! I'll probably wait til warranty expires, as i do not ANY warranty issues in case a problem occurs. You know how some dealers can be about warranty issues!!

you'd have less than $100.00 in parts and fluids and no more than an hour to a hour and a half of time invested, maybe a little longer the first time and maybe even a little messy but the next time will be quick and clean, everything is easy access and for proof just keep a good log and maybe even receipts

Balancing the tires is a trick.... they get heavy after awhile and my nose gets sore.

Gotta agree with candndelivery, you could have done all that yourself, except possibly the tire balancing.

The most important thing to remember is to keep all receipts for material bought. If there is an issue, at least you will be able to provide receipts to prove that you bought the right amount of oil, filters, etc to match the mileage on your truck.

Believe me, I learned that lesson years ago. Even though I kept a log of all the work that I did, I was not able to provide receipts to show that I bought the stuff needed to do the work.

I now have a "log book" that I keep in the truck. In it, I log all the work I do on the truck and there is a special place for all the receipts for the material that I purchased for the work.

Doing your own balancing is easier than you might think. This is the same as the one my Dad had way back when, and I've had one for at least 5 years. Just as accurate as the latest and greatest provided the tire's not out of round and you take your time about leveling everything up.

Phoenix dealer charged with labor $325 for the differential service, Fuel filter $75, air filter $30, $75 oil change and tire rotation about $30.

Total about $535. A smaller Arizona city charged about what you paid.

A big irritation for me is the 15K AMD differntial service period to retain the warranty. I ran my Fords over 50K!

I may have got off better.
Had pretty much the same service done.

Oil Change
Lube and filter
16 pt vehicle inspection
rotate and balance tires
Diff service

I also had a internal fuel rail sensor replaced
The whole bill came to 231.32

With prices that like that, they should give you a free bottle of Vaseline with each service

Did mine last month and bought most of my stuff from the local Dodge dealer.
Fuel Filter $37.35
Air Filter $18.70
Oil Filter $10.70
Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 $$27.00 (Walmart)
Mobile One Synthetic Gear Oil 7 quarts $63.00 (Autozone)

Total $156.75

It took me about 2 hours with rotating the tires taking a good part of it.

This to me is brutal for a 15000 mile service. I am glad I can do it myself or i'd have to get another job!!!! I will be going to synthetic oil my next change as I will be at 20,000 miles and that will be even more $$$.

don't forget to do the Transfer case @ 30k, right?

the synth in the axles seems to be overkill if you are gonna change it every 15k,
but my 4:10's burn the paint off my cover, and i ain't towed in awhile.

www.genosgarage.com has a filter pack for $75 that will help.

I do the tranny and transfer case at 25K but I am using the truck awfully hard.
Normally I would do them every 30K. I like doing them at the same time.

Usually, I stick to the small Dodge dealers. When the dealer vending machines sell the sodas for over a dollar you know you're in for it. I always judge a business that way. Pretty good indicator.

Wow. This is what I do, my dad taught me this when I was 16. Into the log book (which is just a bound notebook): Date, mileage, job done, products used, and pattern switched (if tires rotated). Guess I'll keep receipts for this new truck.

BUT, since I just bought mine (41K miles), I'm getting ready at 5K to do some things. I was told engine oil was done at the dealer, so I think at 45K I'll do engine oil, air filter, fuel filter.

Kinda unsure if I want to do diffs/trans/t-case. On my jeeps I do these each year (roughly). 45K will put me into dead of CO winter, so unless I get one of our really beautiful 50 degree December (or Jan) days, I may wait on those three for 50K or so.

Anyone want to jump in and tell me I'm a fool for going this way?

As far as dealer prices go, that's pretty good.

Here in California, we pay high prices for EVERYTHING!!!
