DC's reply to '05 48RE OD Lockout

--------------------------------------------------------
Here's is DC's reply to my email about the '05 48RE:
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jim,

Thank you for your email to DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation concerning your 2005 Dodge Ram SLT 2500 Quad Cab pickup truck.

Unfortunately DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation currently has no plans to retrofit 2005 48RE transmissions with the overdrive lockout feature.

Thank you again for your email.

Sincerely,

William
Senior Staff Representative
DaimlerChrysler Customer Assistance Center
---------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, DC is not going to fix this one unless real pressure is put on them. I'd pay to have it done.

it would be cheaper in the long run to just upgrade the tranny and get it done...

It's the feature you have on your 04.5 some wacko thought it would be a good idea to take that out and just put in a tow/haul mode that switch's shift points (well attempted to do that) now when ever we are pulling a load and need to keep a lower gear up a hill, it won't lock up OD and makes it fall flat on its face and just keeps hunting between gears... such a pain in the ***

sooner or later i will upgrade the tranny

Yea thats my budies complaint with his 05 when towing. He almost regrets trading off his 02. Seems to me Dodge could rectify this for those that are willing to pay for it. What would it take a software change?
Glad I went manual this time.

Huh?? If it doesn't lockup in OD in tow\haul you have a problem. Tow haul holds the gears longer and lockup longer. It actually works better for in town driving also. Much better lockup strategy and less hunting. The only time mine comes out of OD is really long steep hills and grossing over 16k and then it will accelerate and hit OD and lockup again. There must be a large difference is programming on these trucks because some of the described problems are just not there on mine.

FWIW, if you need to hold drive on a hill just pull it down into 2 and keep the speed over 50 mph. It will hold drive and lockup as long as you want.

I may be wrong but I believe the upgrade requires a TC change. There are after-market shops that will fix it but the upgrade runs about $3000.

clarify please

I have an 04.5 48re and when i push the tow/haul button the transmission comes out of O.D. and the rpm's go up as it is in a lower gear. Is the tranny a 4 speed with an overdrive or a 4 speed whose 4th gear is the overdrive?

Are the 06's the same way? I'm not up on the 3rd gen's, but I think it is stupid that od can't be locked out.

Nope, '06s can lockout OD. 1 click=Tow/Haul, 2 clicks=OD lockout.

Here is a how-to to make you a manual TC lockup switch...and it works. This is where you can have your TC locked up in 1st - 4th gear
