This is the fourth Dodge 4x4 I've had and all have had problems with the center driveshaft with the CV type joint before 60K miles.
Are there any TSB's out on this? I know I'm not the only one having problems. DC needs to address this issue. I know it falls under the powertrain warranty, but it's a pain to have to take in to dealer.

 

Could you explain further on exactly what componant you are refering to? Center driveshaft with the CV type joint??? Are you refering to the front section of the rear driveshaft? or the front drive shaft with the "CV" joint mated to the transfer case. In either case I haven't encountered any common problems with them.

 

The shaft mated to the transfer case. You'll generally only hear the clunking in 4x4, when shifting and turning. Costs about $300 to repair. Had it done on my '91, '97, '02 and now this one. None lasted more than 60K miles. This truck has seen very little use in 4x4, as it was new in March '04. It's supposed to be a foolproof system, intended to compensate for trucks with lifts, etc. Appears to not be working as designed. Perhaps grease zerks would be a good idea.
Above joint desintegrated on a friends '02 CTD and took out transfer case.

 

sounds like the front axwl binding to me. My 01 v10 did it and so does my 04 but only on hard turn in 4 wheel peel

 

Double Cardan joint on the FRONT drive shaft? Sure I've replaced a few, but only if the truck has lots of 4WD miles or goes swimming a lot. Does this truck ever get driven in 4WD on dry pavement? That may be the cause. Otherwise it's not a problematic system.

 

Truck has never been swimming, and has seen little 4x4 use. The only time it sees pavement in 4x4 is when it's covered in snow/ice. Would higher speed driving in 4x4 cause this, ie. 65-70 mph in 4x4? This would be on snow covered gravel roads.

 

I wouldn't think that would be the cause. Tell me, are you hearing a noise and just assuming what is loose, or have you been under the truck and seen the loose part? Maybe it's something different, or just normal driveline lash?
