Cummins Engines for 2003?
Cummins Engines for 2003?
I'm planning to buy a 2500 4X4 with the Cummins. But I live in California and it seems the only thing the CARB (California Air Resources Board) folks will let us get is an engine with the same horsepower as last year (235 HP). The dealer told me it's the identical re-engineered engine as the SO everyone else (except Maine and Massachusetts) can get and it's also the same as the HO. He said the only difference is that it's tuned different to meet the strict California emmission requirements. Is this true? I read on Cummins web site that the HO has an oil spray on the skirt of the piston for extra cooling but it wasn't clear to me if the SO had it also and it didn't say anything about CA, ME, or MA engines. I'd rather not get the older engine just because my Commander-in-Chief forced me to come to California!!!
If the engine I can get is the same, just de-tuned, can I get an aftermarket box to accomplish the same increase in power as the factory HO?
He also said Dodge is working to get the HO approved in CA but didn't know when it might be available. Should I just wait or go for the SO (CA version) and hope it's the new re-engineered version? ???
Re:Cummins Engines for 2003?
F11,
I'm sure some of the Calif guys will chime in but the CA Cummins is the same updated engine as the rest of the states get. I don't believe it has the oil squirter like the HO but otherwise it is just tuning. The decision to wait or get one now is of course up to you but the CA guys on this board are very happy with their's.
Welcome aboard and happy trucking

From what I understand it is just a derated
03 common rail, IE: Third Gen Engine. New style, lower HP due to emissions. If you are in the Armed Forces, get one registered where your parents, siblings, etc live. ;D

Welcome Aboard!

Unless things have changed in the last 10 years, when I was stationed in CA (twice) on orders I never changed my residency over - kept my MI DL and tags on all vehicles too.

If you really want a 47 state version of the HO, it should as easy as ordering one from an out of state dealer (prob AZ or NV) and having it licensed in your home state. The hardest part is that you might have to hitch a ride out there to pick it up. I don't think CA dealers can sell non-CA vehicles. You might want to ask, but, while living in Monterey, a bud had his 'vette delivered from a dealer in Lake Tahoe.

I would think that adding "a box" to a CA truck to make it like a 47 state HO could possibly void a warranty. Why not get the real deal in the first place?

If what I said above is still too hard (which I can easily understand...) I bet you'd love your CA SO just as much.
Re:Cummins Engines for 2003?
Thanks all for the info and advice.

What I was really concerned about was getting the re-engineered engine. I don't think I really need the extra power of the HO right now since I'm not towing over 10,000#. I'll probably be happy with the CA SO (and maybe risk the warrantee with a PowerEdge EZ or Comp type box that's easy to remove before getting it serviced if I find I need extra power). ;D

I did check on CA's laws regarding us Navy folks. Seems if I have a vehicle purchased and/or registered in the state of my last permanent duty station and I'm bringing it into CA, I don't have to re-register in CA. Or, as Bulabula did, I can buy a car anywhere except CA and register it in my state of permanent residence and not have to re-register in CA. However, I can't just cross the boarder into AZ or NV to buy one, register it there, then expect to not have to register in CA (unless I register it in my state of permanent residence). Unfortunately for me, my state is PA and it's tough to do long distance. [undecided]

Thanks again.
