cummings dropped the ball
Maybe I`m just ranting, but why are we having so much injector problems. The over the road trucks, farm tractors, & others haven`t had all this trouble To tell the truth nether has gm or ford.I have an 06 duramax, (no problems) & my buddy has an 05 ford ( no injector problems). When the duramax guys had a lot of trouble with injectors some ranted on & on about the problem. Now that its us, we seem to just think its normal for them to go out under 100,000 miles. They should last 300,000 or more. Do you think if a company bought some big rigs & had injectors go out this soon they would think its normal? If its bad fuel why doesn`t everyone have problems? I really love the 5.9 engine in my 06 dodge but they dropped the ball on this. Ok, its off my chest, thanks

yes its CUMMINS!!!!
and the injectors go bad for a few reasons.... bad fuel, bad filtration, to much rail pressure, people throw in filters that arent rated for the proper level of the truck like a wix is 10 micron when fleetgard is 7 so bigger particles get to the injectors causing them to leak and fail.
the ford 6 liters also have huge issues with injectors.

banyon, I agree that we shouldn't have as many problems as we do with injectors. Mine started giving me grief at around 30K miles. Luckily I had a good dealer that jumped through all of Chrysler's hoops and got me a full set of new injectors at around 40K miles. I am now at 129K miles and going strong. I don't know if they had a bad batch from Bosch, or the fact that the original fuel filters were not up to spec, but it is annoying. Part of the problem is the pressures and number of cycles these injectors have to work with to meet emissions laws and noise levels (so grocery getters will buy trucks). Traditionally, an injector fired once per combustion cycle at a much lower pressure. Now the '04.5 - '07 5.9 engines fire up to three times per combustion cycle at 24,000 psi, and the latest 6.7 engine fires up to 5 times at even higher pressures. So if a normal injector used to last 300,000 miles firing once, then 100,000 miles fires 3 times is equal...... I still think they can do better though.

All the newer diesels have had injector issues. It's just growing pains. They are dealing with the yearly power wars, tougher emissions laws, and the consumer's wants for a quieter engine. I don't think any of them are as reliable or as fuel efficient as my old 12 valve, but I think the Dodge and the Cummins today are every bit as reliable as any other brand of the same model year.

Duramaxs do have problems, but GM stepped up to the plate and issued an extended warranty for up to 200,000 miles on the injectors.
And the Ford 6.0s, just wait, it will have problems and its is not cheap. Also the new 6.4 have problems. Ive been around all three trucks (Fords,chev,Dodge), and have had less injector failures with Dodge.

Every ford diesel we've had at our shop has had replacement injectors and that's a 2000, a 2004, a 2006 and a 2008. Most of them have been between 100,000 and 120,000 miles. The best one of the bunch (the 2000) has only had one injector replaced and is at 180,000 miles. As has been said already, I think injector problems are universal. Part of the reason the bigger vehicles don't have so many problems is they have much better fuel filtration systems.

Bosch recommends 2 microns of filtration and Dodge provides 7 microns. You throw a Baldwin pf7977 in there for 5 mics. but we're still 3 mics. short. The Glacier 2 mic setup's going in soon on mine.

Think about it a minute, Dodge buys the engine from Cummins. I think we all agree Cummins is much better suited to design diesel engines than Dodge.
Cummins buys the fuel systems from Bosch. Why? BECUASE ITS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL MEET EMISSIONS! Nothing wrong with the Cummins design nor the fact they are restircted by EPA to meet emissions standards.
So we have BOSCH (not Dodge, not Cummins) injectors that don't last as long as their previous offerings did. Bosch developed the HPCR system using Euro diesel, much cleaner higher quality fuel than US diesel. Failures of the HPCR system are directly attributed to fuel quality. Period.
HPCR injectors can easily go 300-400k without problems IF the fuel quality is there. I don't see where reliability is reduced even over a 12V. Even a 12V injector with crappy fuel needed rest after 100-150k or its efficency was well diminshed.
Ranting at Dodge or even Cummins is like shooting the messenger, its not addressing the problem.

I have personally had 3 Fords & 3 Dodges (diesels) 6.9,7.3,7.3 & all 5.9's.
The only truck I had injectors go in was the last 7.3l Powerstroke - never any of my dodges.

Can i add something to this.... What i use is a Davco fuel filter like a big rig and is heated by engine coolant.then if i plug it in with the block heater it also has a 200 watt element in it as well. Then you can get different rated filters as well. But yes the fuel stinks now and there isn't much we can do about it.
