Cruise control surge
Cruise control surge
I have a 07 mega cab 3500 4x4. I have a problem with the cruise control surging after you top a hill, about half way down the other side the truck will start to buck or jerk back and forth. It will do it a couple of times and then it smooths out the rest of the way down the hill. I took it to the dealer ship and they plugged there scanner in and wouldn't do it all the time. All sensors checked ok. Transmission sensors are ok. The dealer said there was no fix for it, that was the way the truck is. Just wandering if anybody else has had this problem or is having this problem....Thanks
My 06 surges pulling a hill, but it doesn't buck and jerk. Had someone on here say that they were having similar problems and it turned out to be a vaccum leak. Might be a place to start. I like the dealer response "thats just the way it is"

It sure sounds like it is downshifting trying to keep the speed at what the cruise control is set at. My truck has done it once pulling a load. Shifted to third on the downward slope. You have to remember they programed the truck's cruise control to try and keep the same speed going down hill. You have two options. One is to cut the cruise off on the downward run. Two is to buy an exhaust brake, the cruise will engage this to help maintain speed before downshifting.

my truck does the exact same thing. it does it towing and empty, it can just be felt more when empty. it seems like the cruise gets into a slow down/speed up confusion. like as soon as it goes to slow down, it gets back to the speed where it thinks it needs to speed up. so it jerks back and forth until it goes down the hill futher and it can't hold it back enough or it gets to where it can continue with throttle. it got even worse when i put the big converter in it. i don't think there is anything that i know of that can be done. my truck has 153K on it and it has been doing since day one.
VAcuume leak is your problem. Mine did it until the vacumme line wore thru and stop working. Look under vacuume control valve where the line comes in. You may have to remove the inner fender well lilner to access it. On the drivers side. The vacuume pump is on the passenger side just aft of the battery. You can break into the vacuume line near the firewall just to the drivers side of the engine.
Mine does it too. It almost feels like my old Chevy V8 that had a bad miss causing it to skip going down the interstate. It only happens when going down hill with the cruise on. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.
Same thing here. Only when coasting downhill with the cruise on, and not all the time, even same hill/same speed. Seems to correct itself if I cancel cruise and reset it (most of the time).

mine only does it on slight hills. if i get on a steep grade it wont do it. seems like on my truck there is a grade sweet spot. i'll have to try a reset next time it does it to see if it goes away for that moment. it was there but not that as bad until i did my tranny. now that i locks up tighter, i guess it lets me know it.
I have the same problem on a 07 5.9. Mine only surges going down a hill empty. (Very annoying)I took it to the dealer and they said everything in the cruise control system is electronically controlled and dodge is working on an ECM flash file to fix the issue. They told me to contact customer service (Dodge) and work with them. It has been 6 months and I haven't heard back from Dodge. I recommend you call them so they will see the full extent of the problem and get software released for this issue.
