Crankshaft deflection sensor on "600"

Have any of the techs here been to an orientation class where the Crankshaft Deflection Sensor on the Cummins 600 was addressed?

The CDS was brought up in a thread on another site.I'm trying to find out it's purpose.

In the context of the thread,I thought it's purpose was to catch bombers and void their drivetrain warranty.

However,it could also be used to maintain a higher degree of timing due to the flex of the crank.

Any help out there???

Welcome to the site!!
I think you may be waiting a while for a meaningful response to your post. For the most part we are still waiting to hear consumer details on the "600". DC has been very tight lipped about anything to do with this engine. Mostly, we are all a bunch of mushrooms around here, kept in the dark and fed... well, you know...

I would be intrested in a link to where you were seeing this information

Thanks

It wasn't an official factory announcement.Just a tech who had been to an orientation class dealing with the new aspects of the "600".

Someone will have to reply sooner than later. It's conceivable that one could be in for warranty service soon after it's delivered. The techs would have to be current on the upgrades.

So far, the tech that originally posted the info has not responded to repeated RFI.The responses I'm getting back are suggesting it's a crank position sensor. That's old news and not what I'm looking for. I hope the tech wasn't mistaken when calling it a deflection sensor.

I have taken crankshaft deflection reading on many diesel engines and there down in the low .000 of an in. it would be hard to put a senor to read that.

I'm wondering how you went about doing that?

On the crankshaft in the webs there is little punch marks, you take a dial indicator and put between the webs. then you rotate the engine and take a reading top, right, left and bottom. I have done this on real large diesel engines, I do not know if the marks are on the little Cummins Ill look in the book and let you know.Large generator sets the deflection is usually larger on the flywheel end. The crank is not to long in our trucks if it was20-30 feet long you would have some deflection.

The deeper I get into this, the more I believe the tech meant crank position sensor. So, I'm not going to beat this to death.

That said,I believe the deflection sensor would measure the deflection of the crank under load. Not static,on an engine stand where the deflection would indeed be about zero.
