Is it normal for the crankcase vent tube comming out of the valve cover to drip a little oil on the ground?

Yes this is normal. It is called Blow-By.

cheap fix - zip tie a soda bottle to the hose to catch the drips.

Just wait till you have a nice Shell Rotella oil change and you'll know there's a vent tube nearby......as it will vent right through your ventilation system when your sitting at idle ............You've got to put about 500 miles on some types of diesel engine crankcase oil after an oil change just to stop that stinky, sulfury smell from coming in.

 

Can you extend the vent tube to someplace on the truck to keep the fumes from entering the cab?

 

I do not have this problem. I can smell it when I get out of the truck but I never have it enter the truck.

do it the right way and insatll a catch can and just drain it every so often.
does the same as a pop can but looks like it belongs there.

 

I read somewhere on one of the Diesel forums that Geno's at one time offered a tube extention, that routed the vent tube away from the ventilation air pick-up area, and that fixed the burnt oil smell coming through the vents.

Someone here probably remembers it, or has installed it.
