CP3 started to leak

Well it looks like I will need to make and appointment to warranty the CP3. I was doing an oil change lastnight and saw some "liquid" on an electrical connector and it smelled like diesel. I could see straight up and there is some fuel on the CP3. It is a very small amount but it is there.

My question is... is there anything I should have them look at while it is there? Also, will they try to get out of this warranty claim? My truck is completely stock and I have read some people have no problems and some get hassled. My dealer seems to be pretty cool from what I have heard. I am sure I will be OK but want to be prepaired just in case they try to put the blame on me. What really makes me mad is I have just under 14k miles on it!! Thanks for any help or advise.

Good old ULSD. Now would be a good time to open up an injector pump rebuild shop. The fun is just begining.

My CP3 did the same thing. The dealer replaced it under warranty. This is not a ULSD problem. Mine and many others leaked using the older fuel. DC bought a load of these CP3's with poor seals. Do not complain if they tell you that you are getting a rebuilt unit. In fact I would try to insist on it. If you get another NEW unit, it may have the same problem and will leak again. I know a guy who got a new one and it did leak.

Best of Luck,

Joe

That's no good!!!!
Make sure to bring you servise records, and don't tell them what you think the problem is....just tell them you noticed it was leaking fuel and you don't think that it is safe or right for a new truck. Most likely they will fix it without question, however there are some current threads about stock trucks being denighed warrenty work due to "contaminated fuel", if they try to pull this on you haul butt down there and get a fuel sample from your truck to send in (it's cheap), or find a different dealer. The bottom line is that the fuel filtration system on these trucks is inadaquit for the CP3. This is why DC issure the TSB about "upgrading" the fuel filters to 7 micron. I bet your truck has a 10 micron filter installed, Bostch specs (from what i have read, not from Bostch) the CP3 at requirering filtration all the way down to 3 microns. Which would explain the fuel system issues these trucks seem to have. I wish you the best of luck and I hope I don't end up in ur shoes....my 06 just hit 12k.

Thanks guys.

I do have the 7 micron fuel filter. I changed it out at 3400 miles just to make sure I had one. I was planning on draining about 1/2 gallon from the fuel filter housing before taking it in just for the reason mentioned about them trying to say water in fuel.

redeyedracer------ I was actually thinking to tell them where it is leaking from so they know I do know what I am talking about. Anybody else think it is better to "play dumb"? IMHO it is better to to let them know your are knowledgeable because they think twice bout trying to pull a fast one.

They will figure out that you are knowlegable when you come back to get a fuel sample and start asking about the TSB's and Bostch's CP3 specs.

I have contemplated this "playing dumb" attitude before and I just figured that I should not have to be knowledgable to get sevise, not to mention that your servise writers attitude about you plays a big part in the servise you receive (although it should not..). I figure if a young man goes into a servise department telling the servise writer what is wrong with the truck, that they will think I was messing with stuff trying to figure out the problem and basically trying doing their job. Now if I go in there just like every other Joe and "play dumb" and ask them to please fix my truck because I love it, then I feel I will get the "benifit of the doupt" when the servise writter has to either place me a fault or make the repair under warrenty.

I think the the servise writters know they CAN screw just about anyone that comes through their doors if they feel like it, I just doen't want them to feel that way with me!!! Plus there is plenty of time to tell the servise writter and others involved what you really know AFTER they try and screw you!!!

Anyway this is all just IMO!!!! I would really like to hear (*read) everyone elses view on the subject, seems like an interesting topic....sorry for the hi-jacking rockcrawler...I like ur pics...was that at glammis???dang I'm sooo off topic it's not even funny!!!!

You make some very good points. I think I will "Play Dumb" unless someone convinces me otherwise

Your right...not glamis. I wish it was cuz glamis makes for some good backgrounds. It is actually very near my house here in El Paso.

One more question for everybody. Since it is just starting to leak, any ideas how long before it gets worse?? I know that is hard to answer but it may be next week before I can get it in to the dealer. But then again, I don't know how long it has been doing it. I guess what I am asking is, will they just start pouring badly or do they just always leak small amounts?

I thought mine was leaking at one time. Turned out to be the lines from the rail to the injectors leaking slightly and dripping down on and around the cp3.

How did you fix it? I will have to look at that tomorrow.

The fun began in 2004, long before ULSD. Do a search on "leaking CP3" and you will find 100's of threads. It's been an issue for a long time. My 04.5 had the CP3 replaced just before I traded it for my 06.

You should have no problem getting that warrantied. The only thing my dealer wanted was to make sure it was "leaking diesel" and not just "sweating diesel". They kept it overnight. They figured it was leaking when they saw the pancake size puddle of diesel under it the next morning.

These threads start to pop up every winter, and most of the trucks are experiencing their first winter.

I just snugged up the injector lines where they connected to the common rail. I didn't get crazy, because I don't think they require alot of torque, but I remember at least one of them was VERY loose. I remember I put my open end on one of them and it moved with NO pressure. Maybe it wasn't tightened correctly at the factory, who knows... Anyway, you should be able to see/feel diesel fuel on the rail and/or lines if your leak is where mine was. Again, be careful. Don't do this with the engine running and don't un-screw a fitting instead of tightening it. Theres some pressure in there...

The truck is an '06, they have had time by now to make the necessary improvements to the CP3's. The ULSD may or may not have contributed to this problem, and I doubt the dealer will have any issues with repairing under warranty. However, I would bet anyone that there will be a substantial across the board increase in fuel system related problems compaired to the previous two years directly attributed to ULSD.
