Cp3 Leaking Again

My cold weather leak is back again!!!! This has got to be a serious problem. It only got into the 50's last night. I checked it and sure enough the inderside of pump is damp. I installed a FASS pump last winter to make sure I wasn't starving the **** thing. Will call the dealer monday. This will make the 4th CP3 pump in less than 80k. I wonder how many leak and go undected, if it is only weaping, and the heat from the engine dries it up. I know everyone is not as picky as I am. Although I can't be the only guy with this problem!

Check with Rich2500. Believe he has a fix for the leaking CP3s.

A buddy of mine had the same problem and finally DC sent an engineer to the dealer and he found that one of the fittings (not sure which one) was out of tolerance. maybe that will help.

I thought mine was starting to leak but found it was the banjo bolt going to my FP gauge. Don't know if you have one, but it might not hurt to check the line connections.

Is that the fellow that used oversized o rings on cp3, cumminsforums? There was a post about leak and he had printed out the parts numbers. If that is not the problem sorry to waste your time Jim

yes that is me,it's been about a year now since my pump rebuild and no leaks and total cost was like $20.00, the problem is that the leaks (internal) are hard to pinpoint the exact cause.I have done all kinds of tests on the viton o-rings that I removed from my pump and the only logical theory that makes any sense is that you have two different types of metal(aluminum and steel) of which have two different expansion and contraction rates, and when it's colder outside and the metal temps. are colder they are expanding at different rates while under high pressures causing the leaks.my theory maybe on track or may not be but so far my pump is doing fine.Right now most of these trucks are still under warranty so the dealer just throws a new pump on and things are fine.but what are people going to do when the warranty is up,could get expensive at $1100.00 a pop every year for a leaking pump.I know if mine ever leaks again it will cost me $20.00 to fix.

So, rich...what was the fix? Did you change the seal? And, which one(s)?

TIA

Tony

I changed all the o-rings that seal the two halves of the pump to 1mm thicker o-rings(same diameter)the original o-rings did not have very much of a sealing area

if there was enough demand I could put kits together with the o-rings I used.
but tearing one of these pumps apart is not for everyone alot of caution needs to be taken to keep the pump extremely clean inside.I'm fortunate my ole man owns a automotive machine shop,so I did my rebuild in his clean engine assembly room.

Rich,
Any special tools required to crack open the CP3?
Mine's not leaking but it's nice to know that I have an option of fixing it myself.

Took by Dealer this a.m. and let them have a look see. Tech told me they (DC)
has been having some problems with them in the O-RING area where the 2
halves seal. I said no ****? They ordered another one for me. I guess I'll let them replace another B4 overhauling myself. Thanks for the info rich2500.

I don't blame you for just letting them install a new pump, that's what warranties are for.for me if something breaks or don't work you can bet I'm gonna tear into it and figure out why and that's exactly what I did with my pump, time will tell if it's a long term fix or not but if it is, atleast when warranties expire there will be a cheap route to fixing the leaks instead of dumping big bucks out for new pumps.
