I posed this very same question as to why the HPCR engines do this a while back. One of the things I thought it was and I "think" some of the more knowledgeable ones said is, that this happens to help prevent turbo bark a little.

Do I think it is dangerous, yes. Something you can 99.9% of the time adjust to, I think so. I'm just worried about the 0.1% that you get on it and then something/someone pops out in front of you... its scary.

I believe it is the engine torque management system gradually reducing the load on the driveline and turbocharger to avoid damage to said components. I also believe this feature is reprogrammable to different levels. My truck does this also but only if you start of from wot then release the throttle abruptly, and yes I believe this is dangerous. I know Cat designed a torque mangement system into there ecm in the early 90's I believe it was called "soft touch" and it could be enabled or disabled via a compulink. plus it would not allow full torque in each gear until the shift was complete and you were back on the throttle for about 1or 2 seconds. same thing but in reverse when downshifting or releasing the throttle even when you were using the jake.

This technology available in almost all over the road electronically controlled diesel engines and although a lot of drivers don't like it, it has doubled and tripled the life of driveline components.

 

Well at least I am not the only one that this happends to I was thinking that it was something wrong. Well if this is a safety issues you would think that dodge would reprogram the ecm to eliminate this problem. Its something that I can get use to but like some of you say that .01 percent of the time that you need to suddenly stop it might be too late. Like the one time it happened to me I ended up in the middle of the street in the opposite direction, wet with fresh black pavement which made it really slick. Oh well just have to be more carefull when raining I guess. Over all the truck is really nice. That was just my only concerned. Oh and yes its bone stock except for the seat belt chime has been bypassed at the seat belt connection, I could not stand the back up horn blowing etc....

 

i have a hard time getting out into busy traffic in the morning,
i spool some boost by power braking it a tiny bit,
and that helps it come off the line quicker,

but the wife watches traffic the way we are going, to make sure we don't rear-end someone - come close a few times due to the above discussed problem.

 

My 04 does it. Wife HAD to go Christmas shopping that year with about 3" of ice on the road and a 50 mile trip to LR. Made it fine till we pulled in a parking lot and I decided to play. I punched it in 4 hi till we were sideways pretty good. Let off to correct and we kept going. Scared the out of me!

 

Mine does it if I get in it hard for awhile & then let off. Reminds me of James Brown after he puts down a hard lyric and says "Heh!! afterward.
