Brake "Burp"

Something very odd happened this morning. I was about 9 miles into my normal 12.6 mile commute into work. Some stop and go. I was traveling about 45 mph approaching a stop sigh, and I stepped on the brakes and.....for about 1 second (literally about one-one-thousand count)...nothing. I felt the pedal go down a bit - then the brakes applied. Rest of the way to work was fine. I even stomped on 'em a couple times.

Commute to the gym tonight, then home (ALOT of stop and go) was fine. 28,500 miles on the truck. Got new rear brakes at inspection two weeks ago, but that was two weeks ago.

So what happened? Was it my imagination? A bubble in the brake line? The cold? Hasn't happened before or since.

I would say the hydroboost system did that. Guess a sticking valve.

What is the hydroboost system, and what valve?

Thanks,

Scott

Might have been antilock brakes activating. Was it a bumpy road that can activate antilock when applying?

The hydroboost is a brake booster. Uses the power steering pump for hydraulic pressure. There's several valves inside the booster to regulate the pressure for engaging and releasing the brakes.

Have you check the power steering fluid lately?

I don't think it was the antilock. As I said, I put many more miles on it after that, and all was well.

I will check the PS fluid. It just had its 30,000 mile service 2 weeks ago, so I would have thought the dealer checked that, but I will check it out.

Wexman, the 3rd gen Rams don't use a vacuum booster like you may be used to. The boost is now supplied hydraulically by the power steering pump.
