Collecting An Oil Sample?
Collecting An Oil Sample?
I just ordered my oil analysis kit from Blackstone Labratories, should be in my hands shortly.
My question is, whats the best way for collecting a sample by just removing the oil filter? I'm running the Amsoil 15w-40 with a Fleetguard Stratapore filter, the oil and filter only have 5k on it. So would it be ok to send the oil sample in from the oil collected from the filter, or is that a no go? I realy don't feel like pulling the plug and loosing a boat load of oil just to fill up a sample bottle.
I think i'll just order one of those nice sophisticated drain plugs that let you turn a **** to drain the oil. I think it's called a Fumoto drain plug?

Blackstone does make a pump that you take a sample through your dip stick tube. I just take my sample when i change the oil. I wouldn't recommend taking it from the filter as it might give false contamination readings..
This is one of the reasons why I went with the FS2500...very, very simple sampling procedure...

AkitaSumo- Can you give me the low down on the FS2500? I've heard about it but haven't read much into it. How long are you running between oil changes?
Thanks for the replies fellas.
If I were to run the FS2500 I would tap into the cover it's self as well, just seems a little easier in the long run.
Look at the first picture on this page of the 5.9L Cummins.

The FS is way expensive for no apparent reason. There are other alternatives that are just as good if not better for far less money. I pull my sample out of the filler cap return. Just start the engine, unscrew filler cap and catch it in the Blackstone sample bottle then reinstall cap. You may spill some oil, but not much... Ask me how I know...

...you can purchase an oil cap that the return line feeds too, it swivels, so you do not need to break the line to remove the cap. My latest change went 7,500 miles using Valvoline Premium Blue. Just switched to Rotella T Synthetic, will check this when it has 10K on it.

one of the main reasons for using oil sampling is to determine oil change intervals you are wasting money and time sampling at 5k on a 03 with stratapore go 15,000 miles between filter change and do first sample at 30,000 get a bypass filter and run it untill it clogs up before changing and as stated the fs2500 is to pricy. cant spell
Here is a post I did a while back. The Blackstone lab pump comes with a 1/4" OD tube and you need it smaller (3/16 O.D.) to get the tube down the dipstick tube. Works good for me. Look at post #6 for the list of items. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=123345
Just get the Fumoto valve and use it. Install it at the next oil change and grab a sample as it is draining. I have the Fumoto and taking an oil sample is simple.
15K between oil changes? I'm not risking my $8k motor to save $28 worth of oil.

How long is the Stratapore filter rated for?
I've been doing 8k on the Amsoil and a Stratapore filter for quite some time now. I know for sure that the Amsoil can handle that but Ii'm just not sure how long the filter is good for.
The reason why I was asking my original question was to see how long I can realy drag out the oil it's self. If I got to replace the filter twice in say a 15k mile span, so be it.
I think my best bet is to run it 8k again, do a filter and oil change and then send in the oil for analysis and go from there.
