Cold starts

I live in San Diego and in the mornings when its around 50 degrees or so the light comes on to wait for the heater elements. When i went to Omaha in Dec it was well under freezing in the morning and the light never came on... any reason why it would not come on in temps well below freezing but would in 50's?

The light should have been coming on regardless of where you were, it is triggered by temperature. When my temps are in the 50's I get wait to start light, whn my temps are below freezing I get the wait to start light AND my startup idle goes into a higher rpm. Did your grid heater function then, and now? What about your idle? Did you see changes in it depending on temps?

Did you have the truck plugged in? If so that would be why the grid heater light never came on as the underhood temperature was higher than ambient.

i could be mistaken, but I dont think the block heater actually raises the temp inside the engine compartment.

at least in my case even when it was plugged in, the wait to start came on, just for less time. so you should have seen it.

I guess as long as you see it now, and it started properly even when you didnt, is there really much to worry about? I have heard some people say they dont even wait for the light...
