Coil failure on injectors

How many people are seeing coils fail in their injectors? I've lost two in the last couple months, I just changed the coil on the first one but now I'm going to replace the injectors. Is this a problem with edge chips or just a problem thats going to happen anyway. FWIW I picked up a smarty recently and not running the edge. 70K miles on the truck spending $2K for injectors wasnt on my list of things to do but neither is getting stuck out in the middle of nowwhere and paying Dodge $619 for each injector plus labor(what local dealer quoted me).

I had a solenoid fail on mine also. Had hard start issues because of it. Engine cold it would fire right away as soon as the truck was warm and tried to restart it would have hard start issues. Once running it was great. No smoke ever on startup or while driving it....

make sure you check all your connections ie grounds, also have your voltages checked to make sure they are correct. Otherwise yes it happens. if any of the above is out of the ordinary then you have another issue.

Much of the injector failures we blame on cracked nozzles usually ends up being a bad solinoid which allows improper operation of a injector causing them to leak or spray incorrectly.

(I stand by this untill I can see more then one injector with a cracked nozzle running close to stock settings).

Cracked bodies seem to be popping up, some of it is due to improper torque when putting injectors back together and weakening the top caps.

I just replaced the second injector on my 06, both from open circuits on the injector coil. It's at 162000kms now, first one was warranty, second one was on my dime not wanting to put up with dealership misery on a friday afternoon when it failed so I changed it myself.

its probably because they took all the sulfer out of our deisel fuel, maybe add some 2 stroke oil to your fuel. it cant hurt.

Does coil/solinoid failure set a code? Back last summer I got a P2149 - bank 2 short hi / low. Engine ran like crap, limped home. Next day it cleared up - been running ok since.

Yes, thats the generic code when one is out spec and the ECU can't quite nail it down. The crappy running is the result of the injector not functioning correctly. When the ECU figures out which one you will get another code that identifies which injector is bad.

If your getting a "bad bank" code check the wires running into the valve cover, there has been a known issue with some trucks chaffing through and causing an intermittant problem.

In my case I had a code for an injector circuit being open, meaning the coil was no longer completeing the circuit. My Diablo predator showed a code for #1 injector open circuit as well as Bank1 injector circuit open. Really easy to test right at the valve cover gasket electrical connection with an ohmeter.

"its probably because they took all the sulfer out of our deisel fuel, maybe add some 2 stroke oil to your fuel. it cant hurt."

In my case all the additives in the world wouldn't have saved the coil...nothing to do with the sulphur being removed from the fuel, it's an electrical thing.

OK, so the p2149 - bank code could be caused by a shorted wire or an injector thats out of wack. I' m dumb and happy in that it cleared up and has been running normal for 5 months.
Is it possible to replace the coil/solenoid without replacing the injector ? If it is a scrapped wire, do you just wrap it in electrical tape and roll on.

If it is a wire just wrap it and go. Lots of these injector wires are chaffing right at the grommet where they go into the valve cover.

thats the exact same code i got when i got stranded on the side of the highway. turned out my #5 injector shorted out. i was told that the ecu shut down the second bank to revent damage to the motor and by doing so it had NO power and ran really rough.

does anybody know the procedure for checking the coil resistance at the wire connections on the valve cover and what the specs should be. Thx in advance
