Clunk when downshifting coming to a stop
Clunk when downshifting coming to a stop
This just started up today and is starting to happen more often as I drove during the day.
Had to take the folks to the airport this morning and coming to a stop once I heard a clunk. It felt like going over a bump, so Im having a hard time coming up with a good spot to start.
A little later in the day heading out to pick some stuff up, I got a few more clunks when coming to a stop.
It sounds like its coming from the front of the truck. Would the drive shafts be the best place to start looking?
I checked my trans fluid and it's high........ over the curved portion after driving and pulling into a parking lot. I didnt do the normal gear cycling before checking as I had just gone through a few red lights before stopping.
I know ive got a leak on my upper fluid cooler line for the trans that seems to run down the line and down the bellhousing... but I havent taken a look inside the bellhousing to determine if there is a fluid leak inside, and of course I have hardly any tools with me or the service manual.
Thanks for any help!!

I have not had this problem on my truck but a few years ago had it on my wife's car. It was still under warranty and the dealer refused to investigate the issue. When slowing down to stop it would actually shift into first gear too soon and the clunk was coming from the fact it was now in 1st gear at a speed too fast for this gear. One day it did it really loud and that was it !! The car would not move forward and had to be towed. The dealer agreed that it must be a problem!! They replaced the transmission.
Mine was doing the exact same thing. It ended up being that the spring that pulls the kickdown cable(or TV cable, dont know correct term) wasnt returning or pulling the cable all the way to the "rested" position. Thus keeping the line pressure a little high and causing a "clunking" noise when slowing or stopping. In the rested position,I could move the cable another 1/2 or so before it would be at the end "rested" position.A new spring and as good as new now.Hope this helps.
I am not sure if all 04.5's have the cable. They went to another system around early 05 I believe.Mine is a 325/600 truck and still has the cable instead of the electric tv motor.Spring is on drv side,ft of trans where cables come from belcrank on engine.
I have the same problem (hard clunk on coming to stop) plus a 2-3 hunt at light throttle, but on an '06. Just had the trans replaced too (Jasper) after 2nd gear band broke. Was cheaper than rebuilding and had 60k warrantee. Jasper says it's external to the trans. The mechanic who replaced the trans doesn't have the equipment to diagnose further. Dealer was not much help either. I think this forum is my last hope-
