Clunk going into 4-lo

Well, finally out trying 4-hi & 4-lo in my 2005 qc swb auto.

I noticed though that when I am going under 5 mph and in 'N' and switch from 4-hi to 4-lo (as suggested from manual) that it CLUNKS going into 4-lo. Seems to go in just fine but it sounds loud. Same thing when going back into 4-hi. I have read that it might make a sound but didn't realize that it would sound louder then the radio.

This normal? I didn't feel or see any after effects once hearing that noise. Just checking on it.

Thanks.

FWIW I recall mine made some sound, but I didn't think it was too bad.

You're manually switching gearsets. The INPUT shaft on the transfer case is barely spinning in drive at 5mph, go to neutral, it stops spinning, then going into 4lo it's speed is 2.73x faster than if you were in drive. That's what the clunk is.

John, I was in Neutral when I put it in 4-lo. But, I might try waiting a little longer before putting it in. Either way, SO MUCH easier then with my 1st gen going into 4-lo. That would be STOP, rock back and forth once or twice, then finally it would go into 4-Lo. I like this switch on the fly deal.

I didn't think it was doing any damage, but just surprised how loud it was. Still rather have GEARS in there though making noise then some belt or something. LOL

Drew03 - The manual says you can be going up to 5 mph ( I think) that might help in getting into 4-Lo. I will look again later tonight to see exactly what it says on the procedure. Plenty of power though in 4-lo.

I alway come to a stop when putting it in 4wh Low. After stopped I push the lever into 4 Lo. If it won't go easliy I let out the clutch slightly to rotate the trans case and it drops right in. Of course I have a manual. Autos are a little different....

The reason it clunks is changing from high ratio to low ratio. Also you wanna be driving in a straight line when you pull it into 4 wheel. That way all the wheels are turning at the same speed.

Guys, I was always under the impression that it is better to be rolling in and out of 4 low but that it will engage while stopped. Better check up on the ol owners manual I guess. I use it everyday and it clunks every time. Used The 4 ton truck today to pull the 4 ton dump trailer with the 4 tons of wood and 3 ton tractor back to the farm. Also makes backing uphill to the building alot easier. ks

You should remeasure that tractor. It might just be a 4 ton tractor.

Nutty, I had 4 tons written down but I didn't want any of the tractorphiles flaming me.... the tractor weighs 5600 # with a 1600# bucket + chains, etc. total 7200+. I checked out that 2 cords of softwood weigh 10,000 pounds. I have about 3.5 cords on the trailer right now so I'm gonna scale tomorrow just to see. Anyhow, it pulls like a dead weight. That trailer with its 2 single wheel axles has gotta get a pair of duals on it. ks

Manual says a 1 - 2 mph will help the transfer case to shift firmly in.

my manual t-case doesn't make any noise going into and out of low range. I use low more than high when pulling the trailer since my tq converter won't let me go in high range off road. It just grunts and doesn't move. it needs a new converter!!

Guys, According to Siberian my memory was right. I guess if all else fails we can read the owners manual. ks

Nutty, had same issue, sounded horrible, tried it in neutral (clutch in) truck stopped, no problems, have done it now multiple times, no noise. Just make sure you send it to low like you got a pair.
