Check engine light question

Just dropped my truck off at the dealer for the check engine light comming on. The truck has 8300 miles. I have not heard from them yet but the service writer says it probably came on cuz I just filled the fuel tank on Friday and "overfilled it" and some went down the vent tube. I call BS because I did what I always do when filling up. ( top it off slowly for another 1/2 to 3/4 gallon) He said once it clicks you have to stop or this will happen. The truck ran fine Saturday and when I started it up Sunday morning is when this light came on. Can this really happen?? I am waiting for them to call me to see what they found.

If this IS true and they just need to turn the light off, should there be a charge? The service writer said "maybe" but I don't think there should be a charge.

id call bs too. what kinda crap is that. if they try to charge you, make them prove to you that overfilling it is the problem. sounds like the writer needs a wet willie

no charge on vehicles under warranty. unless they find a programmer or module on it. overfilling is bs. many people have the vent mod, which allows you to quickly fill it completely to the top. never a problem. your writer is a knucklehead. ask for a print out of the codes.

do you know how to check codes yourself with the key on and off 3 times procedure?

NO. What is the procedure for codes?
I didn't know the newer trucks could still do this or I would have saved myself some trouble!!

Thanks

There's a code for overfilling your fuel tank?

wet willie= wet your finger in your mouth, stick the dampened finger in someone else's ear. to gauge the intended reaction, try it on your spouse first.

CEL checking= turn the key to on(no start) and off 3 times, then back to on. watch your odometer, the codes if any will start to flash on the little screen they will start with a p****. there will be the letter p followed by 4 numbers. do a search here for the p**** codes given, and there will be a wealth of info.

Good info to know. Thanks dodgezilla.

I just got back from the dealer. It was a wire for the Intake air temp sensor was disconnected. Looks like I might have done it when I changed my oil on Saturday morning. Says the wire is by the oil filter. Cost me $52 to diagnose and repair. That will never happen again. I more than doubled my oil change price!! By the way it was code P0111.

The wierd part is I drove it all day Saturday with no problems.

take that thing back and ask why is there a charge for a vehicle under warranty. i would not have stated that maybe i knocked it off when changing my oil. it fell off on its own. the dealers will take every opportunity to charge when not deserved and to deny warranties if they can get away with it. I am sorry that you got ripped off by your local dealer. in the future, may I suggest, that when you have a cel, or any problem that is not affecting the operation of the truck and you can wait a few hours, to post a question like you did earlier, and wait for some replies. Even on a sunday night, there is someone here lurking that is willing to help. I know it can make someone nervous to have problems with an expensive truck, i still go through it myself, and we get antsy and take it in to the doctor. Once again, sorry they hosed you.
do a search for p codes and when you locate the link, save the page for future reference.

Yea I wish I had asked befor I took the truck in. Could have saved some cash. Next time I will ask first. I also found the web site for looking up the codes. Here is the link for anybody else who wants to put it in thier favorites.
http://www.obdii.com/codes.html

They asked me who did the recent oil change and me not knowing where they were going with it answered "I did" That is when they said that's more than likely when the wire got knocked off.

On another note. Can the light be turned off without a dealer scanner after a repair has been done??

the light will go out after several heat cool cycles if the problem that set the code is gone. heat cool is all the way warm, all the way cold. usually takes 3 times.

I work across the state line into New Mexico and there is a dealer about a mile away so I took it to them. I can say I will never do it again. I will take it back to the dealer I bought it from cuz they are much easier to work with. I'm sure would not have even charged me. I am writing it off as a live and learn. I'm just glade it was only $52. Won't break the bank, but I did learn. Actually I will check my own codes if it ever happens again!! (thanks again dodgezilla )
