Check engine light came on.

Today my engine light came on when I started it and stayed on. Truck runs fine no problems I can tell of. Is it possible to do the key trick in the 2006 trucks. I tried but couldn't get it to give me a code. Is the dealer the only one who can get codes.

No you can not do the key trick. Dodge change the programing in the 06 model year to a CAN and you will need a code reader to retrieve the codes. You can go to a local part store and see if they can pull the codes for you. My Father In-law did this and was told by the dealer not to tell the him if the part store cleared the code. Otherwise, he might void his warranty.

I tried the turn key method and it did seem to work. But no code came up before it said done. It just shows ------ for a few seconds and then says done and goes back to the odometer.

As CATDIESEL mentioned, you can go to some auto parts stores where they'll check the codes for you. Autozone checked a code for me recently, although the check engine light went out prior to having it checked and nothing showed up on the scanner.

There should be an Autozone somewhere nearby, they seem to be everywhere these days.

Good luck.

Myakkadodge, what part of 06 was your truck made? Minewas produced after June of 06. Might have something to do with the difference because their were some changes to the ECM.

I have a time set up at a dealer tomorrow morning. I took my afe filter 0ff and put on the stock assembly so I wouldn't get any lectures from the manager. Man, what a difference the afe filter made in performance and sound they are worth the money. I am also wondering if the crankshaft sensor from rokktech is failing so I am going to put stock one in to see if that makes a difference. I thought about going to an autozone but I'm afraid they might screw something up accidently. I will let you know what the issue was.

Code P0191

Got to the dealer and checked for codes. Ends the engine light was because of a P0191 code. This code is under Fuel Pressure Sensor Rationality. At first they thought my fuel pressure gauge might have caused it. I argued against that so they got on their service database. Then they found a TSB for that problem code.

The TSB number is 18-032-06.

Date Nov. 2, 2006

Subject: 5.9L CTD P0191 Fuel Pressure Sensor Rationality

Models 2006 - 2007 applies to truck built on or before Oct 23,2006

All that needed done was a reflash of the PCM with new software.
The reflash went fine. But when they did it my PCM didn't have my Vin #
So they think my truck has had a programmer on it. But I never have. Is it true about programmers and modules clearing the Vin#? However they didn't say anything bad about them. Just to take them off before going in. Is this an excuse to put one on .

I had not had a programer on my 04.5 but it also showed no vin# and when it did that it was right after the dealer reflashed my ECM. If fact it caused a CEL to come on and when i took it back the had to do something to correct it. It also disabled my fast idle setting and I ahd to ahve them re-do the fast idle setting again.

My '06 shows codes by turning the key, and it comes up with codes every week. Most are just nothing, like key security issues or whatever. The last code did not show up by turning the key, and it disappeared right away. Weird.

Exclamation Don't let them bully you!!!

Farmer, speaking from experience, some flashes actually wipe the ECM clean. The 18-003-06 flash I did to my truck went fine, but another employee here did it to his and it kept throwing a bad vin checksum code and a security key invalid code. We had to treat it like a PCM replacement and enter the VIN and Secret Key PIN before it was well. Neither of our trucks had programmers or modules before the flash. Also, as ammo to anyone else this happens to, when the dealer connects to your truck with a Starscan, it automatically reads the VIN or else you can't do the flash. It also has to communicate with Chrysler to check for the available updates. NO VIN, NOT POSSIBLE!

So, Chris........can you not download the flash to the Starscan and do multiple flashes , like we used to be able to do with the DRB? With the DRB, you could download a flsh as long as you had a module number. I didn't get to use the Starscan much before I left the dealer world a few years ago. Had some training on it, but again.......several years ago!

Thumbs up

No problem vzdude,

Our shop is set up with all wireless internet, so everything is done right in the cab of the vehicle. It's like having techtools in the DRB, if that makes sense. You can manually input the module # into the starscan, but you have to see what the vehicle has first anyway to verify the update is necessary. Once you hook to the data connector and it reads the vehicle's info at that point it will connect to Chrysler and bring up all files applicable right there in your palms. You simply pick the files you want like on a PDA (touch screen), download those to the Starscan and that's it. Of course a shop without wireless has to do the multi step hook to the vehicle, then to the shop computer, then back to the vehicle. Really neat toy!!!
