After a factory canister and a factory tank pump stranded me I went to a Fass and am now running the Fass and a Fuel Boss pump from Glacier Diesel. The Fass gives the ability for better filtration but can be noisy and is starting to get finicky. The Fuel Boss or a Mitsua are an easy install and produce excellent pressure based on the engines RPM but you should add good filtration if you go with those.
Like papaduck points out, a dead intank pump is a big repair on the side of the road in Alaska. I am also surprised yours has lasted as long as it has.
Pressure Guage in the minimum may give you some warning of an impending failure and may give you an option of where to stop for a repair before a terminal failure.
I would recommend the Fuel Boss or Mitsua which can run in conjunction with the stock pump so you don't necessarily have to do any tank work at all. Good insurance.

The 03' trucks LP tend to last a long time for some reason. I would replace it before I left or carry a spare from Geno's. Airdog 100 is all you will need if you want to replace it.

The truck is a '99 -2500 series 24v with over 550K miles. I bought the truck 7 years ago and the only repair I have done was change the alternator and new tires. Florida -Texas and a dozen trips from Florida to Pennsylvania. Right now the truck has been sitting in North Carolina where it broke down and I am in Florida waiting for my ss check to come in so I can go get it. I would like to know more about this pump you are telling me about and where to get it, as the cummins dealer in NC does not have one.
Thanx, Joe

Hi Joe,

Welcome to the DTR! As madhat mentioned earlier, you would be best served by posting your pump question in the second gen forum. The pump referred to in this circumstance does not apply to the 99 model year. I have attached the link in order to get you to that area. You will surely get the answers to any questions regarding the pump there.

Fuel Pump

I have had 4 dodge diesels from 2000 to 2008, I still have the 2000 and the 2008, I lost a lift pump (Canister type) on the 2000 after it was upgraded and I lost lift pumps on the 05 and 08. When the pump went out on the 08 I was stranded below I-40 and had to be roll backed to Winchester TN - 100 miles in opsite direction I was headed for repairs. I never let my tanks get below 1/2 or at between 1/2 & 1/4 tank. Im in the process of installing a AirDog on my 2000 and also a pressure sensor with warning light. The AirDog at XTream diesel is $530 and ships free. It's pretty fool proof installation, hardest part will be dropping the tank but I have a motorcycle jack that should help. You are going on a long trip and it sounds like you need peace of mind and I understand where your coming from. Whether you get the pump described in this thread or an AirDog or Fass, at least you will know when you start your trip you won't have to worry about failures.

Sorry to hijack. Has anyone been able to put the OE lift pump on with the in-tank pump? Just curious, because I'm getting long cranks every 2-3 weeks, but there's no pattern. 3 dealerships can't figure it out, new PCM, filter, etc. In '04, my canister pump went out at 8K miles and the dealership installed the in-tank one (one of the very first). So now I'm suspecting that might be having the problems. I would like to just put the canister one back on as a backup to the in-tank one, but I have no idea what the side effects are or if it's even possible. Thanks.

You should pull the in tank pump before installing another pump. A new pump would have to draw fuel through the old pump which it may or may not be able to do.

I think that the canaster mounted pump could be installed but I do not know what was replaced when they installed the in tank pump. I do know that a draw straw would need to be put in the tank.
