CB Radio interferes with the engine

Ok electrical experts please help me out with this one. This past weekend I had the CB radio hooked up on the truck. Powered by cigarette style power outlet and a mag mount whip on the roof. This is the same set up I have been using for the past 3 years. But this past weekend any time I was on the mic the motor was effected by my transmissions. Incoming transmissions had no effect. But on my outgoing the motor would sorta sputter and the RPMs would kind of jump around. It was the worst stopped, foot on the brake and in Drive. Very very minor while in Park. And at speed, say 65, if I was trying to power up climbing a hill it almost felt like I was loosing power. I had the Jeep in tow for this trip. The only changes to the truck I can think of since last using the CB on a trip towing the Jeep are my shocks and muffler. I’ve seen those 2 way radios mess with my transmission temp gauge before but nothing like a CB radio messing with the motor or maybe the transmission of a vehicle. Please any suggestions on where to begin?

My friend had the same problem with his and it was because of the Quadzilla chip. I don't know how new your chip is but you might need to send it in to get updated. Try taking out the chip and plug in the bypass plug Quad provides you and see if that fixes it. I posted a thread on this a while back. I will provide you the link if I find any useful information in it.

Upgrading to the X2 totally solved my issue, even with the 150 watt "fm amp" Brian

Been there and done that!
  • wire the radio directly to the battery (fuse it)
  • run a ground strap from the radio to a ground on the dash
  • magnet mount antennas aren't grounded as good as fixed mount
  • get your SWR as low as possible
  • have a local radio shop wrap some chokes in the Quad harness
  • have your radio peaked, tuned and aligned by a qualified tech

It may take one or all of the adjustments to fix your problem. I had to run my Race under the hood ............... including the switch, so I lost in cab adjustability as well.

How many watts are you transmitting?

Oh man you guys are telling me what I really did NOT want to hear. I really like the Quad but if I got to go through all that just to make it work right, that's just not right. I went back and checked some dates and I never had this problem with my other Quad Standard box. I had other problems with it and I swaped it out for this current box with a new harness back in March. Just never used the CB since then. I may do like huntram and check on the new X2 stuff but if I'm going to have to pay for another I might as well just get the Smarty. I was going to add that at some point anyway!
In the mean time I can mess with the SWR, grounding and chokes. As for a CB I just the basic Cobra 19 DX style.
Thanks guys you've been a huge help as always.

You'll notice in my sig, I'm not running any tuner right now, LOL. My Quad Race is on Ebay until tomorrow. I resisted a down loader for as long as i could, but I'm going to try the Smarty.

He hit the nail on the head! You need to power the radio directly to the battery!
