Can't shift transfer case into neutral or 4lo

My manually shifted transfer case behind an automatic transmission shifts fine into 4hi, but I can't get it to budge into neutral or 4WD lo while driving on a wet, muddy surface. I'm coasting along at less than 5 mph per the owners manual - any useful hints or tips appreciated.

not sure but you may need to be stopped to go to neutral and 4lo. thats the way i go don't want to chance grinding. 4hi i slow to 10mph or so.

You want to be stopped. If you get it in neutral with out being in park you may have to turn the engine off just to get it back to 4hi or 2wd. It took me two times to learn that.

Mine shifts best into low if just barely moving, less than 1 mph...

Just barely moving works best. Read the owner's manual. It gives very detailed instructions.

I usually go real slow, put the shifter that is on the stearing column into neutral, then shift the transfer case into 4Lo or neutral, and then put it in drive or reverse

I stop, put tranny in neutral, and use a "quick" almost slam into 4 lo. Don't stop in neutral on the T case shifter as you may have to kill the motor to keep from grinding gears getting it out. Any speed under 50 mph for 4 hi. Never had a problem.
