Can't decide for exhaust

It's driving me crazy. I want to ditch my strait pipe, I am sick of how loud it is on the highway. But I don't want to go back 100% stock, I still want some sound. I have looked into the Donaldson mufflers, but the 4" is $145! The 5" I can get for $87, but then I need 2 reducers so i'm still looking at quite a bit of coin.

I am considering just putting back in the muffler or cat. What is the best bet? I want to get rid of the drone on the highway. Maybe hear a bit in the cab when I get on it, but not to much. Basicly, hear it when I want, but also not hear it on long highway trips. I know I want my cake and eat it to but what's my best option? Money is a huge factor, I need something for around $100, and not much more, putting in a stock part would be very nice!

My 40" Neslon was $67 (cdn) 3 years ago from my local Cummins store, pics and part number in my gallery. Nice sound, not obnoxious.

I just pulled the OEM muffler off my truck and straight piped it, but the Cat and resonator is still in tact. That combo is just what you're looking for, IMO!
It has a deep tone/rumble at low speeds, but not real loud. When you rap it up under a bridge, it's pretty loud, but quiets down considerably on the highway. No drone, up to about 20psi boost, but I haven't towed anything to work the engine, so don't know what that sounds like, but driving empty, even uphill, it's still pleasant on the highway.
If you have the cat still, maybe you could find someone with an OEM resonator and install it towards the back of where the muffler was, along with putting the cat back on.

I have a gutted cat with stock muffler. Its a tad bit louder on the outside, but you cant hear it at all on the inside. It doesnt sound like thats what you're looking for. I wonder if anyone has ever put a cut out in a diesel exhaust to run it straight out at the pull of a cable or run your full exhaust when you want that.

Yea a cut out is defininatly out of the budget. Don't really want to do anything to the muffler or cat, still on warranty and need it incase anything goes wrong. Yea i've heard the Mega's are nicer without the muffler because of the reasonator, but no luck in finding any for sale. I will give it a shot just putting the cat back on, worse case I will just put both back on and live with no sound until funds allow for good stuff.

Been thinking about the Nelson, but any local mufflers i've found are just insanly priced, especially by the time I buy a hanger, clamps, etc. No luck on finding any used ones local either.

Ah ok, that's not bad, I might have to look into it. How is it towing on the highway? And you still have your cat in right?

No one has ever said anything about it being too loud, not even my wife or kids while towing.

There's a Cummins store in Edmonton, (780) 455-2151

Mocho- I live just outside Mayerthorpe, litle over an hour from Edmonton and buy what I can from Western Cummins in Edmonton. If you sign up to be a "cummins power buster" ( cheesy, I know)- you get 15% off whatever you buy there. Works out very well when buying filters, etc, I buy guages there too.

I liked the way my 06 sounded with just the cat. It only droned a little when towing heavy at lower rpm's. I took the cat off last Saturday and it is WAY too loud.
