Can i use my spare tire? its a tad smaller....

i have bfg all terrain 285 70 r 17 on all 4 wheels. my spare is a bfg rugged terrain 265 70 r17. is it safe to use it as a spare or will i wreck my diff? or will it be ok if i limit my speed?

I would not use it, your differential will hate it. If you had to limp 2 blocks at 5 MPH maybe, but other than that I would not.

You can put the stock wheels under there just fine I ran an H2 wheel, which is wider than stock, with a 315/70 in the spare location with no trouble. Now I have a Toyo 285/75 on an H2 wheel in the spare spot. No problem.

There is only about 30 tire revs per mile between the two sizes. You are in the same place I will be soon. I would put the spare on the front and limit speed and distance. Try to pick up a used 285 for the spare.

I blew out a tire a while back, had 245/75-16's, put a 265/75-16 on the rear to try an get home, pulled over 20 miles later and swapped it to the front.

Wouldn't the 'limited slip' design of the dif allow us to be able to use a different size. Wouldn't it essentially be the same as going around a corner, but straight? Im probably wrong here but i would think that as long as you dont do anything to cause the dif to 'engage' the second drive wheel you should be ok. just my 2 cents.

I'm with you on this, makes sense. I don't see how it would damage anything when used temporarily.

I had to run the factory spare ~100 miles out on logging road with 35's on the other three corners. Flat was on the back so I swapped a good tire from up front and ran the mini spare on pass side front. I have free spin hubs so no worries but even without hubs if you put the spare on the front with the open diff i think you would be fine.

I have a superhitch double receiver for my double truss 3ft extended class v hitch and i can barely fit the factory spare with it so i just have to resort to putting the donut tire on the front if ever get another flat.

Front only, you might be ok on the rear, might not. Front would be fine for a long time. However much better off getting a proper spare. There is clearance there for 35" tire if you don't have aftermarket hitch or exhaust taking up any room there.

nor would I. But it will get me where i have to go. I would purchase a proper sized spare of my tires were not $250 a piece, six of them cost enough.

I'll be driving around like this too until I find a decent used 285 to throw under the truck for the spare. I have a used 315 MTZ for a spare if anyone needs it. I decided it would be better to have a 265 on the spare than the 315...

Wow, so far no one has come along and said they don't even carry a spare, there's usually 1 or 2 but that makes no sense to me.

I'm like the others above, I'd put the smaller spare on the front.

I just bought 5 chrome H2's with BFG 315's amd sold 4 of them so I'll ave a 35" spare for when my new 35's are installed.

I'd also look for a used tire the same as your others.
