Burning old oil in fuel tank
Can anyone tell me what a good mix is? I am getting tired of throwing all of the old oil away that I have. A number of posts mention pouring it in the tank to be burned. With the price of fuel I like the idea, I am sure it will help with lubing the fuel system as well, just don't want to add too much at one time so for a 38 gallon tank how much can we put in there without looking like a locomotive and is it legal?
I really don't think you want to put any old oil in your fuel system what so ever, you might have gotten away with this years and years ago with the older diesels but with todays injection systems on these trucks you'd be asking for mucho problems....IMO.
Look in the thread on used oil and fuel filters. There is a link there for a cummins article that gives the info you need. They say 5% which is about 1 1/2 gallon per 30 gallon tank.
I burn it in my 2nd gen all the time.

This was a common pratice with old diesel engines which did not have the high pressure common rail injection system me do on these trucks. Not saying it wouldn't work just stating you might want to think of the possible problems that could happen to the fueling system.

Common rail by itself is no big deal, all the old 2 cycle Detroits were common rail, Mack and Cummins and Cat always said the injector pump was superior on their individual feed systems. Read the Cummins release. They even have a system for doing that automatically on larger engines. They do have the answers on used oil in the fuel.
Everything I've read from Cummins says not to burn waste oil in engines with a catalytic converter. They say it will plug the converter. Personally I doubt 1 quart per tank would harm anything, but I wouldn't suggest going with 5% waste oil in the fuel.
I'm all for burning waste oil, I dumped 2 quarts in mine this morning before I filled up.

Just something to consider. Look at the sulfated ash and/or the Conradson carbon levels of the waste oil you'll be burning. These are indicators of the amount of deposits that will be left behind in the combustion chamber, exhaust valves, turbo hot section, etc. when the waste oil is burned.

Since I run propane I do not have too much to worry about deposits, but that is a good point. I have heard it actually will get you a little better mileage and with diesel over $2 a gallon and climbing I am looking for anything to go in there that I can burn!
