burning oil, excessive smoke, mpg down, and vibration
I have got several problems with my truck that I can not figure out. These have all taken place over a period of time but have exausted my resources and patience.
I'll start with the most recent which is buring oil. I used 4 quarts of oil in 6000K miles. I have not had any problems up until now. The last oil change was 3 weeks ago and it didn't use a drop on that go around. I use Rotella 5/40 synthetic and have since it had 20K miles on it (145K now). The amount of oil coming from the blow by tube looks to be the same as it did with 50K miles on it, just enough to make the pan a little wet on the side, and the undercarriage is not wet. I don't notice any gray smoke coming out under acceleration. Could my rings be that worn out? I change the oil every 7500.
ON the topic of smoke is my next problem. I do run the Edge juice, but 90% of the time it is on level 1 or 2 since I haul all the time. it is smoking even with it unplugged though...black, not gray or white, just coal black. This has been going on for some time...since about 90K miles. Took it to the dealer several times with no luck at them diagnosing it. Just slowly getting worse and my power is going away as well.
It also smokes exessivly on start up..gray...it is fuel.. not oil.has done so since it had 40K miles. Had 2 flashes done with no change, and no help from the dealer. 40K is also where my mpg dropped about 2 mpg. It was also turning colder and winter fuel was coming aout so I blamed on that until spring came and no change. Power was still normal though and it didn't blow any black smoke at all. Thats when I bought the Edge Juice, 70k miles.
After talking to several people, we concluded that it could be the CP3 so, i bought a used one with 6K miles on it off an 05 and installed a GDP fuel system with the walbro 392 pump. Nothing changed. Still smoked on start up, still lower power, and still blew black smoke. I am clueless on this one.
No fuel in oil, change the fuel filter every 15K, and clean my air filter every 15K. NO codes are thrown and never have.
Now my vibration problem. IT is coming from the rear somewhere..meaning t-case back, well pretty sure. I have had the rear shaft out...new u-joints and rebalanced. No change. Now whatever is causing the vibe makes a noise under acceleration, THe vibe has always been under power only ..goes away while coasting. I thought it could be the pinion bearings or even the ring and pinion. Both checked out fine. No play back and forth, up or down with the pinion bearing. R&P backlash seems normal. I changed the fluid after the noise started and no metal shavings and the oil looked great...use mobile 1 75/90 synthetic.
Sorry it is so long. Thanks in advance for any help. I am sure I may have left some things out you may need to help diagnose, just ask and I'll answer if I can.
Oh and yes I searched...thats why I tried the things I have.
one more thing...I set the cruise at 69 and the longest it idles it about 5 minutes for cool down.

Injectors crossed my mind, but I had only read where if bad they leaked and I don't have any diesel in the oil and no knock at any rpm. Anything else to look for or way to test?
Never thought of timing, but I thought if a sensor went out a code would be thrown.
The turbo was my thinking on the oil, but not sure what to check. The shaft has no movement in or out...does have some side to side, but unsure of what would be bad. No oil on the inlet side..have not pulled to check outlet side.
Could the turbo be on its way out and not spooling fast enough causing the smoke issue?
The carrier bearing, and all 3 u-joints are new. I even bought another used shaft to put in it while I had the original shaft checked..everything was fine and was not out of balance.
I also checked my rear axle wheel bearings..all looked in good shape.
Tires have been eliminated as a source of vibration as well.
THis weekend I replaced the old K&N style filter with a new AEM oil free one. No change in smoke. All clamps are tight to and from the intercooler.
Thanks for the responses.

Bad injectors will not always put fuel in the crank case. It depends on where they go bad. Running pressure will have 2 ill effects, it will wear the nozzles and cause incorrect injection angles and streams, plus it is really hard on the rail relief valve. Both will cause excessive black smoke even without the box. A bad MAP sensor will also cause excessive black smoke. all the previous can happen with NO codes or CEL and will cause mpg drops with no indication of problems.
The oil consumption could be caused by a blown turbo seal that is leaking small amounts of oil. Enough to use it but not enough to create smoke. Leaks into the compressor and you should have an oil film in the IC, leaksinto the turbine may be hard to find with tearing the turbo apart. Do you have gauges or are you using the attitude to monitor EGT's,boost, etc?
Vibrations are tough. I have seen u-joints, center bearing, t-case, and rear axle cause the same type and they are tough to diagnose.

Thanks for the info. I'll pull the hoses off going to the IC and see what I find. If the turbo is shot...whats a good turbo for towing? Heard of 2...the super b and aurora(sp?) 2000.
I was planning on ditching the Edge anyways and going with a good set of injectors. Don't ever use more than level 1 or 2 anyways. Is there anybody out there with a good injector and nozzle combo? THe MAP sensor couldn't be too much, I'll probably get one tomorrow, cant hurt anything.
Right now I am just using the guages the attitude has. I pulled the mechanical guages after about a month just to see if they read the same, which they did.
Thanks again

I do remember reading that about the Edge Juice..does timing and duration only.
Checked my IC last night, no oil film.
Going to the dealer this morning to pick up a couple things..we'll see what happens.

I have heard it both ways and still don't have a valid answer.
A bad FCA will also cause excessive smoke and other weird things. Not sue if it applies since you swapped CP3but omething to keep in mind.Good luck.
OK..went to the dealer...not the one I normally take my truck to though. I was talked out of getting the MAP sensor for it. I talked to what the parts guy said was one of the better diesel mechanics around. After describing what has been happening and has happened in hte past. He says it is definately my injectors. Says I need to bring it in and have the return flow test done to find out which one(s) it is...which the dealer I take the truck to said they did, among other things, since that was my initial thinking. They said everything was always in spec everytime I brought it in. Like I said though i had planned on buying injectors anyway so any good ones out there that people of had lots of use out of? I see a lot of people recommending the F1's...anygood on towing a lot.maybe this is a question I should post in the HP section?. Thanks
