can you visually inspect the valve seats while doing a valve adjustment??

No. You have to pull the head off to see.

So basically pre-06's have weaker seats that may be more prone to failure and if they do drop it's likely going to take out your motor and there is no good way to check them?! that doesn't help me sleep at night....

03-04 had the weaker seats and valves.04.5 and newer went with an upgraded seat(j3) and inconel valves,much better at dealing with the higher temps.

yeah but isnt there alot of 04.5's and 05s that drop the valve seats as well?

I would just call gillete diesel in utah that is where I got my info. They siad they get alot of trucks in. He told me that they have had stock trucks that have had problems.

FYI, I personally know someone that had the head done by a very respected engine builder. The best valve seats money could buy were installed along with many other modifications for racing. His truck is now sitting in pieces waiting for a NEW head to be finished. The truck runs very high EGT's when racing and the seats still came loose even though they were not supposed to. Now on the up side, becasue he invested in the better parts, when the seat came loose a valve only touched the top of the piston and did not kill the piston or the cylinder. Keep your EGT's reasonable!!!
