breakin????

Picked up the new truck today and just wanted some details on the best thing to do for engine break in. Its got about right at 500 miles on it now and i've taken it pretty slow so far. Heard hooking on to something heavy and gettin on it was the best thing for but i just wanted to make sure and if so, do i go ahead and do it now or wait another 500 miles

If you want to wait an additional 500 miles, it would not hurt.

OTOH, Hookup 10k & head for the hills!

Probably. With my dad's 06 he started givin er heck at 800 miles. He towed about 10k with a 20 mph headwind for 400 MILES. Now you can notice slightly better power and mpgs.

Good luck with your truck

At about 500 miles I loaded the bed full of lumber, 72-1/2" sheets of plywood, and 48-2x6x10's, drove close to 150 miles with that load. I have NO idea what that load weighed but it was a goodly amount. Then at around 900 miles I hooked up my steel bumper pull 4-horse, loaded up 4 drafts right at 2500# each, plus about 500# hay on the roof and all thier junk, did close to 1K miles on that trip. Truck ran GREAT, still runs GREAT at 12K miles with about 2/3's of that mileage hauling heavy loads.

Get out and have some fun with that new truck!!!!

All good advise. Best thing for the engine is to load it and run it. The initial breakin period of 500 miles is mainly for the gears in the drivetrain. The engine requires a load so the electronically controlled fueled motor will see enough diesel so the piston rings seal to the cylinder walls. We are talking about thousands of a inch here. The cummins is a massive 1000 lbs heavy block that is really a huge heat sink. It takes load on the engine to equally heat up the block and heads especially with the superior coolant system. The term breakin is misleading. Nothing gets broke! The piston rings simply seat individually to each cylinder wall irregularity, creating a tighter fit. You will know when your motor has set them rings. Kind of like your first kiss/G rated guys
