Hi David,
There is no set mileage to determine when your diesel engine will be broken-in. There is a good article by Jay Chlebowski called "Breaking in a Diesel Engine" at www.thedieselstop.com that is very informative.
You may be able to get results in hastening your break-in duration by pulling your 5k airstream up some mountain grades, because gravity really increases the weight factor. Under normal use with light loads on level terrain it may take 20k miles to accomplish break-in of a diessel engine.

I have the same truck and have 16,000 miles on it. I am not getting as good of milage as others are posting. 10-11 pulling my Jayco TT and 17 Hyway. I will be going to synthetic motor oil at 20,000 miles which is what Dodge recommends (break in period). Are you getting about the same?

Empty if I baby it around 55 I can get 18 to 19. Driving normal around 60 I get 17's. When I pull my trailer I get 13.0 driving between 55 and 60 but I can't help it with all the power I got to use it so I get 10-11 doing 65-70 above 70 I am in the 9's. Every 5mph I loose 1 mile per gallon. My trailer weights 5880 dry and when my wife and I get done loading its probably around 7000. Trust me we do not miss any amenities from home.
Your are getting better milage pulling than I am empty I have have 4000 more miles on mine. Now I am upset!!!
